HAs anyone been to Livorno & Naples ? We will be there next month on the Legend of the Seas 7 nights Mediteranean cruise. Any advise on excursions and whether we could opt to do our own excursions instead of paying a bomb for the ship's arranged excursions. We plan to visit Florence, Pisa, Capri & Pompeii.

Pompeii is superb, there is a lot to see and the excursions are usually very good. It does take quite a while to tour and I doubt that you would have time to visit Capri on the same day. Of the two Pompeii is, in my opinion, by far the better place to visit.

At Pompeii you really do need a guide to show you around and although the cruise tours may seem a little more expensive there are advantages in taking them.Hope you enjoy the cruise.

We stopped in Livorno last spring. Yes, the ships tours are pricey, but a few things need to be kept in mind.
Florence is about 90 minutes or more from Livorno, Pisa is closer. The ships tour got us right into the Academie to see Michaelangelos David, there was a long line outside the museum, we were wisked right in no waiting. Also, the bus back to the ship was forty minutes late and the ship was held up for us. The tour guide was in contact with the ship as we were heading back to Livorno, I'm not sure the ship would wait for a late passenger or two.
Just a few things to keep in mind.

Thank you to you both for responding on Livorno & Naples. I shall certainly heed your advice and join the ship's excursions.

The other ports of calls are Marseilles, Olbia(Sardinia)& Palma de Mallorca. Are excursions necessary at these ports ?

I would not take a tour at Palma, unless there is something you specifically want to see. Valdemosa is probably the best tour but if I was you I would simply go into the town itself. There are a lot of things to see as the town is a mixture of old and new plus the shopping is good. The cathederal is worth a visit.
