My favorite is Sitka--lovely little town with beautiful Russian cathedral, nice walk to museum and woods with totem poles. There are usually folk dancers at the dock. Shopping pretty good and not all imported uglies.

Sitka was also our best port of call. Our cruise did not stop at skagway so cannot compair to it. There is a nice walk along the small boat dock and coast to Sitka National Historic Park. Her you can tour the past battle grounds of the Russians and native Indians. They use to, maybe still do, have totem ploe carvings and a book store that reflects upon the history of the area. We also took a whale watching tour and saw our first ever humpbacks and other wildlife of the area. We stopped by the Red Dog Saloon but it was packed so could not partake in the live intertainment going on there. Sitka was the best port of call for us, its a nice quiet little town.

Another vote for Sitka! Charming town with awesome physical surroundings. The Sitka Natinal Historic Pk, with its many totems placed along a forest trail, was an impressive experience & is only a 15 minute walk from the dock.

Winner - I met the Russian Folk Dancers twice on HAL ships. It was a real coincidence as they had only cruised twice and I happened to be on both the cruises. Have become friends with one of them. They are great, aren't they?

I though the main Alaskan ports were rather spoilt by being over commercialised.(Too many T-shirt shops!)

Skagway looked the most authentic. The white passs mountainrailway excursion is a MUST!
