Sydney is very pretty, you can walk around Darling Harbour and the Opera house. They have a bus that stops at all the sites and you get on & off when you like every half hour.
Melbourne has the state theatre concert hall botanical gardens and the trams and trains are easy to catch, not to mention shopping in both cities.
I will be in Hobart for the first time this week so will let you know and its been 20 yrs since i was in Auckland .
You are doing the cruise I would love to do please let me know how it goes.

. We are booked on the RCI Millenium cruise leaving Sydney on 19 December.
The ports which I'm most familiar with are Melbourne which is great for shopping and Hobart which is the gateway to some of the most scenic countryside in australia. From Hobart you can cover a quite a bit as Tassie is reasonably compact. They have beautiful historical buildings including Port Arthur (around 2 hours drive) and around the wharf area in the city, Salamanca Place is great for local crafts. If you like mountain vistas then Cradle Mountain is a must. One of the state's most beautiful coastal areas is Freycinet National Park (about 4 hours drive from Hobart) which is where I spent a few days recently - it really is a magical area.

New Zealand is supposedly very beautiful - I've only been to Wellington and Auckland on work trips (I live in Canberra, Australia) but everyone has told me that the south island rivals Norway's fjord area (I remain to be convinced)! They also produce some of the world's best white wines so if that is of interest be sure to check out Marlborough and Hawkes Bay regions.

I hope this has been of some help. Have a great cruise - we can't wait to go on ours.
