We'll be taking our first cruise next summer on HAL's Zaandam. Where does everyone recommend that you stay in Ft. Lauderdale if you go early? Did I read somewhere here that HAL has early check-in at Pier 66? Is this the only hotel to have this? Would you book through HAL or directly yourself?

We booked through HAL a day early for our millennium cruise at Pier 66. They will meet you at the plane and transport you to the hotel. There is a city tour you can take either before your cruise or after if your plane doesn't leave before 3 PM.

Hi Mary Ann!
First of all, I am very envious of your going on Zaandam next year. I am dying to sail on that ship (or Volendam). Hope Zaandam comes into service on time and not delayed 5 months like Volendam is.
Regarding a pre-cruise stay in FLL:
Hyatt Regency Pier 66 is a great hotel. It overlooks the port and has a revolving lounge on the top floor with a wonderful view of the port. Marriott Marina is another good spot, just down the street. Have stayed there also. Most popular these days seems to be The Embassy Suites, also on 17th St. near the port. Upper rooms on the east side have a view and breakfast is included. Also a complimentary cocktail hour.
Try to book thru HAL and your transfers and a hospitality desk wil make things easier.
Regards,
JL

Hello Mary Ann - request your extra nights with HAL - it's all so convenient - they meet you at the airport, transfer you to the hotel and with luck, you can fill in a number of the preboarding papers at your leisure. On sailing day you are transferred to the ship. Incidentally you only need to take an overnight bag to your room in the hotel - your cruise luggage will be stored for you and transferred to your cabin. It's doubtful that you would get accommodation at Pier 66 on your own - HAL usually has most of the rooms booked for incoming and outgoing guests. There's little difference in the rate either. Visit the revolving bar in the hotel - you get a grandstand view of your ship. Your travel agent will arrange everything for you. I'm dying to see the Zaandam - have fun.

Thanks everybody for your advice. I have learned so much from this board. I've looked at several others and this one has the best format and nicest people of any I've seen. I'm sure I'll have lots more questions as the cruise draws nearer. Guess I need to count the days - seems like the norm?

Hi Mary Ann:

Although we booked late last year and "missed out" on Pier 66, we ended up at the Marriott (booked ourselves) and got a room on the top floor - - great views! The next morning we saw the Grand Princess backed into it's berth just across the street. Pier 66, Embassy Suites, Marriott, et al are all within a short distance of each other and all are a reasonably short distance to Port Everglades.

Hi MaryAnn. I always stay at the Airport Comfort Inn. It has free transportation from the airport to hotel and then from the hotel to the cruise port. They also include a very nice complimentary breakfast including cereals, bagels, waffles etc. Where can you get free transportation, a good night sleep and breakfast for a reasonable price. You or your travel agent can book it.
