What can cruisetalkers tell me about the port of call: Naples, Italy, from first hand experience?

Do you recommend any excursions?

Is there a town within walking distance of the port?

Are there opportunities to do your own thing?

When you're docked in Naples, your actually in the city centre. It is a typical Italian city: loads of cars and great shops. You should be careful for pickpockets.

You'll see quite some mothers with young children, begging for money. What many tourists don't know, is that there's often a second child under her dress; when people search for money in their wallet the second kid robs you without noticing it. Sounds unbelievable, but I saw it myself as well: these kiddies are well trained professionals!

Naples has great shops; suits are topclass for great prices! When you consider a new suit, I would say: don't take your old one with you, but buy a new one for the gala onboard.

Simply every company offers excursions to Pompeii, the old city destroyed by the vulcano.
Other sighseeing tips: Piazza Municipio, a big square with gardens, the near-port Palazzo Reale, the San Carlo Opera house (1737 with 3000 seats, one of the biggest and most beautiful popera houses in Europe), and the San Severo Chapel.

Most of them are possible to visit by feet (be careful for traffic).

regards!

Ships dock at Molo Beverolo(spelling???)-without leaving dockside it is possible to take hihg speed hydrofoil to either Capri or Sorrento (both well worth a visit)to go to Pompeii take a taxi to train station and then train to main-gate at Pompeii. You can also walk out of dock gate, directly opposite is a small park/piazza--top left hand corner of which is entrance of Royal Palace-wonderfull collection of clocks -----from there a short walk to Via Partenope and some swanky hotels, one of which I think is Excelsior has excellent roof top /open air restaurant over looking the bay.Just be careful of the traffic-they dont drive!!THEY AIM!!!!!!!!

We're off to Naples too next month [fingers crossed]. I assuming there will be a number of local people on the quay offering a trip to Pompeii when we dock? How long does it take to get there? We're only in port from 1pm-6pm.
MrP & I have been before, but can't remember much, and the kids & camera haven't; so a must see.

Hey PamM
You wont have much time to see anything of Pompeii if only in Naples 5hours-as an alternative you could take a taxi ride up Vesuvio---if a clear day the view is SPECTACULAR

Assuming you have the time, I cannot imagine NOT going to see Pompeii... Of all the ruins we saw in the Med (and believe me we saw more than our share) they were by FAR the most interesting. A truly fascinating place that is worth seeing.

We actually did a sort of whirlwind tour that included Capri in the morning - it's gorgeous, but if you have to choose between Pompeii and Capri take Pompeii.

Hi,

We went to Sorrento last year and took in Pompei and Herculaneum (Ercolano) - Pompei was vast where as Herculaneum is a far smaller site. I prefered Herculaneum as it was compact and in my opinion better preserved due to the fact it was covered in mud and not burnt by the volcano like Pompei. Certainly easy to get to from Naples by train and definately preferable when time is tight.

In 2000, with a full day stop, we took a superb half-day trip to Pompei [which was about as much as we could absorb in one go] then, on returning to the pier, headed for the archeological museum on foot [at a good clip and with a good map], figuring on at least a couple of hours. It all worked until we got to the museum entrance only to be told it was closed because - so we were told by a guard - it was the day before a statutory holiday. We walked slowly back to the ship down a wonderful network of back streets at about the time the kids were getting out of school, and enjoyed the experience. Our sense was that for people in reasonable condition, and taking sensible precautions, walking in Naples can be safe and rewarding.

I actually lived in Naples for 2 years. Without a doubt it was the most amazing time of my life...streetside venders with fresh made Marguerita pizzas, the chaos of the traffic, the smell of the city, the history and culture of one of the most densely populated cities in Europe. The views across the harbor of Vesuvius are amazing. The island of Capri, Pompeii, the Amalfi coastline, and some of the most amazing people I have ever met make Naples unique. The local mom-and-pop restaurants are great. It is filthy and wonderful and crowded and busy...and it's Naples.
