Mr lee. Let me throw this question back to you. What is the situation with kids on ships in the east. I frankly think that in entering this topic that you may have some fiendish oriental plot in mind. This forum has been inactive for some time. I had hoped it would stay so. In asking the question about kids you may have let the genie out of the bottle. I really like children. In North America you have to pay your money and pray that your selected vessel is not plagued with children. Its a big problem.

ps are you related in any way to the LeeKey shipyard family.

Merry Christmas

I heard that Disney while good with the kids, dissapointed adults looking for a typical cruise experience. For instance I heard there was no midnite buffett, waiters just passed thru the hallways and public areas with trays of different things. We've been on both Carnival and Premier which did a terrific job with the kids and provided a great cruise experience for the adults. Also this June we went to Bermuda on NCL and our teenagers really enjoyed the teen program

So far we have cruised with Celebrity and RCCL. Our Celebrity - Mercury experience was so-so there were over 300 children on a Thanksgiving cruise and just not enough space to put them. The ship did bring on 5 extra counselors but there was not many places to organize activities. Much of the time was spent playing cards or board games. My then 7 year old son had fun, but with 92 kids in his age group they were limited on what they could do.

Last year on the RCCL - Rhapsody of the Seas they had a very well organized program and many excellent activities for children. It seemed like the teens had a so-so time but the other age groups all seemed to be having a good time. My son was in the 6 to 8 year old group and had several children around his age. On the at sea days there were family activities that were fun and some really fun science experiments (they made super balls, volcano's, slime, and other fun things.) The kids also earned ship-shape dollars that entitled them to "buy" prizes at the end of the cruise. A fun incentive for them to show up and participate.

I have heard that Carnival is pretty good and the Cunard QE2 has a really nice program.

Our family of 17 did the Celebrity Century (7 grandchildren under 13) and thought their childrens' programs were outstanding! But we didn't have the huge numbers of children aboard that the Mercury voyage Jim_Phx described. That would have been impossible to properly supervise but, I think, rather unusual.

We were on QE2 last July - 7 days NY-Bermuda-
Nassau-Newport News, with 2 kids - girl 11, boy 7. They had a great time. There were a decent amount of organized activities and a good game room. However Cunard does not really cater to kids and I would be careful to take kids on a cruise when kids are expected - Christmas, Spring Break, etc. Also avoid adult oriented them cruises like the annual Newport Jazz Festival.

We all had a great time - including the kids - but we picked a specific cruise where we expected an above normal number of kids.

I was a bit surprised when planning to take our 7 month old on our cruise with RCCL. We had to pay $800.00 for his ticket and were limited to buying a larger cabin to accommodate the crib they require we use (he sleeps in a bed now) For that $800.00 they provide no food, no diapers, no childcare.... really nothing, considering we're paying for a larger room for each of us. So, does anyone know just what we are paying for? Please don't tell me liability!!!

We took one of our grandchildren on the Soveign of the Seas two years ago, he was 11 at the time and we have just come back from the Voyager with our 12 year old grandson. Both cruises the children thoroughly enjoyed the activities and we had no problems at all. My suggestion is that you give your child a cheap watch if they dont have one so that you can give them a time to meet you for meals. For those interested both times we left the children with the Ocean Club staff while we visited some properties in Jamaica for our agency and they charged us $4.00 US per hour. When we got back our grandson told us they had taken him to lunch and then they had played basketball afterwards. We said they were very nice to him.
