Kudos to the design team responsible for the recent refurbishment of the Norwegian Gem. They paid homage to the classic liners of yesteryear. The dining room is a monument to both Normandie and Queen Mary. As one enters the room passengers are greeted by two large floor to ceiling murals resembling Normandie's Grand Salon Panels by
Jean Dupas. The theme is continued on each side of the room. The ceiling's lighting fixtures & columns both resemble the 1st Class Dining Room onboard Queen Mary.

The ocean liner theme does not stop with the dining room. It continues into the mid-ships two story foyer/bar. Two Lalique sconces resembling the ones located in the Grand Salon of Normandie are incorporated into the room along with bas relief panels reproduced by Chinese art students.

Finally lithographs, menus, passenger lists of the Normandie, Rex, and others line the walls entering the card room & library on 12 deck. The theme concludes in the card room where there is a tribute to the S.S. United States. The walls are decorated with a cut-a-way, menus & passenger lists and a Glenco model of the ship encased in plexiglass.

NCL again did an excellent job paying tribute to the great liners of the past.

We are taking the Gem out of NYC soon. The other choice was the Grandeur of the Seas from Baltimore.

I would have preferred to meet the Baltimore DC crowd, but it was a 2 day longer cruise and they had guaranteed insides where NCL Gem we could choose our own cabin: Midships bottom deck.

I have toured the NCL Dawn twice. It has the same interior designer as QM2, and saw many of the same fittings, and design theme, although Dawn is more ornate. That whole class could be a luxury ship with a smaller passenger density, higher service level, and more grownup cruise format.

Anthem OTS, Royal and Sapphire Princess too big for us. QM2 was too long for our vacation allotment.

Interesting! I never knew that. I've sailed on most of the ships that sail out of the northeast, but never the Gem. I knew she was recently refurbished... I'm gonna have to look for a good sailing!
