Things look very bleak for the Charlesville/Georg Buechner.
today the protection as monument was lifted, and it is assumed she will be towed out of Rostock very soon to the breakers in Lithuania...

If you know a private investor willing to spend some 10 mio EUR please let me know...

Letzte Fahrt wohin? Rostocks Oberbürgermeister Roland Methling (parteilos) könnte schon an diesem Montag mit seiner Unterschrift den Denkmalschutz für das Motorschiff "Georg Büchner" aufheben. Dann könnte das Schiff an einen Händler verkauft werden, der es nach Litauen zum Verschrotten bringen will. Allerdings gibt es auch das Angebot eines belgischen Vereins für Industriearchäologie, das Schiff als Denkmal zu bewahren und nach Belgien zu bringen. Die Belgier interessieren sich für das Schiff, weil es als "Charleville" von 1951 bis 1967 als Fracht- und Passagierschiff im Liniendienst zwischen Antwerpen und Belgisch-Kongo im Einsatz war. Danach gehörte das Schiff als "Georg Büchner" der Deutschen Seereederei in der DDR. Es lag als stationäres Ausbildungsschiff viele Jahre lang in Rostock-Schmarl am Kai der Warnow. 1991 wurde das Schiff an die Stadt Rostock übertragen. Seit zehn Jahren liegt es im Rostocker Stadthafen. Es diente als Jugendherberge und Hotelschiff, betrieben von einem Förderverein. Aber dann wurden die Unterhaltungskosten zu hoch. Der Verein wollte die Verschrottung. Die Denkmalbehörde unterband das damals. Inzwischen ist der Förderverein insolvent, ein Insolvenzverwalter eingesetzt, der einerseits die laufenden Kosten zu übernehmen hat, andererseits daran interessiert ist, die auf dem Schiff lastenden Verbindlichkeiten durch den Verkauf zu decken. Die belgischen Freunde der Industriedenkmale werden von der flämischen Regierung unterstützt.

Allerdings fehlt es bis heute aus Sicht der Stadt Rostock an einem tragfähigen Konzept, vor allem aber an Geld, das für einen Transport und die Instandsetzung notwendig wäre. Zudem hat der Insolvenzverwalter klargemacht, dass das Schiff nicht verschenkt werden könne. Die Denkmalbehörde des Landes war zwar prinzipiell nie gegen eine Verschrottung, sagte aber, es müsse alles unternommen werden, um das Denkmal zu retten. In Schwerin sieht man jetzt offenbar dafür keine Möglichkeit mehr.

GEORG BÜCHNER left Rostock today under tow and is scheduled to arrive at Klaipeda 31.05.
