Coast Guard rescues some of crew stranded by Sandy

Crew's famed tall ship was built for the 1962 movie "Mutiny on the Bounty." The replica Bounty has appeared in numerous documentaries and feature films including "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" with Johnny Depp, according to the ship's website.

At least 14 of the 17 crew who abandoned the HMS Bounty while in the path of Hurricane Sandy have been rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard off North Carolina, the director of the vessel said on Monday.

Coast Guard helicopters hoisted the crew to safety, plucking them from life boats, director Tracie Simonin said after receiving an update from the Coast Guard. She was awaiting an update. The Coast Guard could not be reached for comment.

"The 17-person crew donned cold water survival suits and lifejackets before launching in two 25-man lifeboats with canopies," the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The tall ship was built for the 1962 movie "Mutiny on the Bounty" and lost power while at sea on Sunday night.

The Bounty was about 90 miles southeast of Hatteras, North Carolina, or roughly 160 miles from the center of Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane bearing down on the U.S. East Coast, the Coast Guard said.

The three-masted, 180-foot (55-metre) vessel was believed to be taking on water and was without propulsion, stuck in 40 mile-per-hour winds and 18-foot (5.5-metre) seas, the Coast Guard said.

An HC-130 Hercules aircraft had been in contact with the crew while flying overhead, and the Coast Guard was determining which rescue vessel or aircraft was best placed to respond, Petty Officer David Weydert said.

"The crew is safe and accounted for. They have abandoned ship," said a posting on the ship's Facebook page. "They are in their sea survival suits and in a life boat."

The original Bounty, a British transport vessel, gained infamy for a mutiny in Tahiti in 1789.

The 1962 movie starred Marlon Brando as lead mutineer Fletcher Christian. The replica Bounty has appeared in numerous documentaries and feature films including "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" with Johnny Depp, according to the ship's website.

What were they doing in the path of the hurricane? It's not like this storm has taken any surprise moves. It has been on the forecasted track for days, so they should have know where it was an where to stay clear of.

I know, it reminds me of the FANTOME in 1998 or 1999 when it got caught out there in Hurricane Mitch's path. For some reason or another they went right into it and lost all of the crew onboard.

Very very sad for the crew members who were put in harms way. Hopefully the Coast Guard pulled off a miracle and saved them.

The media has been calling this Frankenstorm for days now. The Hurricane merged with a cold front and I am sitting it out ... its bad right now. Major winds and we have a few more hours to go.

I know you're having a tough time of it, the worst is coming sad to say. My friend in Brownsmills, NJ lost power over an hour ago and will be feeling the full effects soon.

Even though it was a replica the loss of the ship is quite tragic. It's a shame that they didn't seek safe harbor somewhere instead of being out of the ocean. Maybe then no one would have died.

Based on his years of experience it is possible that the ships Captain thought it would be safer to be at sea rather than tied up in a harbour where the ship could still have been badly damaged and sunk by Hurrican Sandy.

With the design of this timber built ship he no doubt had a very difficult decision to make and was very unlucky.
