Gorgeous lines. But don't forget TARAS SHEVCHENKO -- she entered service after ALEXANDR and before SHOTA.

There was a rumor that the Russians also planned a 6th larger sister ship using the same basic design to be a trans-Atlantic speed queen.

Thanks for these pictures. I sailed on the Taras from Australia to the UK in 1976, 5 weeks at sea. The food was dire, the crew unfriendly but I loved the ship. Pity only the Pushkin has had an afterlife.

Recently saw this rendering on Facebook, which purports to be the planned larger Soviet liner.

That's an amazing find, Thad! She reminds me a lot of the CANBERRA, but there are lots of design elements from other liners of the 60s in there as well.
It really is time for an update to DAMNED BY DESTINY!

Interesting rendering. Looks like a cross between Canberra, Oceanic, Eugenio C etc.

I remember a few years back Peter (of midshipcentury), I think, had a wonderful photo of the Taras Shevchenko near Istanbul on the way to the breakers. She looked pristine and wonderful. She had been idle for a while so if she were really pristine I cannot say. The photo may still be on Peter's site.

I had friends who sailed on the Lermontov on a very rough cruise with heavy seas from Baltimore. They, experienced sailors both, mentioned what a poor sea-boat the Lermontov was. Has anyone else heard or experienced the same?

Claudio, i read many times that they were inspirated by the Leonardo Da Vinci, but i think it was only because of the black hull with the white stripe, if you look closely they don t have many resemblance if not the fact they where 60' product (they where more similar in many way to the Sagafjord more), I can say they where more a bigger version of the FRITZ HECKERT wich was also a Mathias-Thesen-Werft builded ship of the early 60'. And for what I know they where and also reputed as good sea-boat
