Thad did you know that in the late '30's HAL was talking about a rebuilding program to up grade the STATENDAM. They where confronted with the fact that STATENDAM in 1938 0nly 9 years old was outdated by the ultra modern NIEUW AMSTERDAM. Although still very popular, HAL was afraid that she on the long run would loose popularity. The plans got a go ahead after the proposed new build project ROTTERDAM was halted.
The project would have changed STATENDAM profile and she would have a completely new interior. There was even talk to rename here. But WW2 got in the way and with the destroying of the STATENDAM the project was finished.
