Very interesting but for the life of me I can't figure out how you enter the cabin....maybe a hidden door in the closet

This was the first example of a courtyard stateroom, made famous a few years later aboard the American Export Four Aces, and still 30 years after them aboard CANBERRA. This was not a private veranda, you're looking at the door entrance to the cabin. Inboard of this were two layers of interior cabins which had windows opening onto the shared veranda--this was not an outside space, it had windows.

In addition, SATURNIA and VULCANIA had an entire deck of staterooms with private, open-air verandas, located on the deck above this one.

As Rich posted, there were covered/sheltered verandas one deck up. I wonder why there were no large windows that could be opened in the veranda instead of portholes.

Also, the ones above were not bunks. They were double bedded rooms. My mother spoke of these rooms after she traveled with my grandparents who enjoyed these "Italia" ships often going to and from Europe just after the war. They also used CGT starting with the old De Grasse and a little later the post-war Ile-de-France.

You're right; the stateroom in this image, as noted in the caption, is from Cabin Class. These rooms were actually interchangeable with First Class, but I don't think that happened very often.
