Reports have appeared today that the ' Discovery Sun ' has now arrived at the Bangladesh port of Chittagong for scrapping.

The ship had left Florida about the 8th September 2011 and called at Durban on the 4th November 2011.

Thanks for this update, Neil. A mystery finally solved. No one at Alang knew anything about her arrival despite recent reports that she had been beached there. I guess DISCOVERY SUN will now
disappear without much fanfare. She, OCEANBREEZE and TARAS SHEVCHENKO are the only major passenger ships I know of that have gone to Bangladesh in the past decade.

WOW, what a complete 360 from where I thought she was headed. Is there a chance to get photos of her from there? Thank you Neil for the update.

I doubt if any pictures will come out from there as they keep visitiors away from the ship breaking area.

If they do appear I will post them on my new face book postings on ' Neils Cruisingchat ' and also let you know.

Couldn't you just download Google Earth and search the site to find them? Maybe the program will give you real time imagery of the site.

Just a thought.

Google Earth is definitely not providing 'real time' pictures.

Very interesting post Neil, thanks! I try to keep track of cruise ships sold for scrap, and their beaching dates.
Speaking of beaching dates, do you know when exactly DISCOVERY SUN was beached?

Hi rd77

From the information I received it appears to have been the 13th February 2012 but that could have been the arrival date at the port and not the actual beaching of the ship.

Hi Neil,

I just read on another discussion group that the DISCOVERY SUN was beached at Chittagong on Feb 25th, 2012. I do not know where the author of the posting got this info. I'm sure one of upcoming issues of Marine News will give us the final answer!

Thank you Pam for the information too. This is so sad, I was really hoping she'd go to Alang, just to be able to see DISCOVERY SUN one last time.
