Being scrapped
quote:Originally posted by Rex:Never did understand why Georgic was never fully repaired after the war, but still allowed to sail so damaged? Why was that?
Most likely because of the shortage of ships. Shipping lines were desperate for ships and every old tub available was placed into service in the late 1940s through the early 1950s. When newbuilds started to come on line, many of these worn-out ships were finally sold for scrap.
BTW, the image of of heavily damaged Georgic was taken during the war. She was raised, partially rebuilt and returned to service. Unlike her near sister Britannic, Georgic never sailed as a luxury liner after WWII and was used for 'austerity' passenger service.
In my opinion, Georgic was the slightly more attractive of the two w/her rounded bridgefront.
