Oddly enough your mention of the 'boarded up pub' and that ruined church next to the anchor lead me on a diversion of sorts where I found a wonderful Google Street view of that area in which I proceeded down the QE2 mile to the waterfront and as far down as something called the Union-Castle House and Calshot Spit Lightship next to a old sailing mast.
There was also a rather large old red brink building with white columns going up the front at the entrance to the portgate before you get to the Southwestern House (hotel?). What is that?
Lots of fun!

The mast has gone too [the area is a mess really], but not sure if it was a real one from any vessel; I think not.
Barry, yes that is Holyrood Church bombed in the Blitz. There is a T memorial in there but I have not seen it myself.
Perhaps the next new cruise ship terminal, if it is built, could be named after her !

It's probably QE2's stem anchor (the middle one of the 3 that were originally in her bow). It was removed in New York on October 7, 1979 while QE2 was docked at the NYPST and stored for many years as a spare on her foredeck. The other 2 bow anchors and the smaller stern anchor are probably still in place on QE2 in Dubai.

Hello all,
This was the spare anchor, stowed on the QE2's bow until 1992 and then removed for storage in Southampton, and remained their ever since. QE2 in Dubai still has all her anchors present and correct.

That's the one I was talking about. Thanks for the confirmation.
P.S. I have looked at the link and it contains misinformation concerning when the stem anchor was removed. The actual date was Sunday October 7, 1979 at the NYPST as stated in my previous post. I was present at the time it was removed, having arrived early to board QE2 for the Oct 7-12 eastbound crossing (#309). The anchor had come free and lowered itself to the waterline during a bad storm encountered on QE2's westbound crossing of October 2 - 7, 1979 (not 1976 as stated in the link).

Here's a photo from July of 1990. So this is the anchor in the bottom left of the photo (the red circle indicates deck plating and railing damaged by a bow wave)?

Assuming the reported problem with the anchor in December 1976 is true, then the statement about it never being replaced is definitely false.
QE2 definitely had all 3 bow anchors in place in 1977, 1978 and 1979 as can be verified from photos taken in those years. I have photos that I took personally in September-October 1977 that show all 3 anchors in place. I have also seen many photos of QE2 with blue boot topping with all 3 bow anchors showing. These latter photos are from 1979.
And as I have stated above (and in posts made here a few years ago), I was present when the stem anchor was removed in New York on October 7, 1979. I also have at least 1 photo that I took later in October 1979 showing the empty hawser recess in the bow.
The gap was plated over in QE2's 1979 end-of-year refit. This is confirmed by published photos of QE2 transiting the Panama Canal early in 1980 on her "World Cruise" that show the blue boot topping, plated over recess, and the spare anchor on the foredeck. QE2 reverted to red boot topping in her 1980 end-of-year refit, a fact that makes the Panama Canal photo so easy to date.
In my personal opinion, the entire 1976 claim is based soley on misinformed hearsay, but I might be wrong. However, I do know for a fact that my statements about the state of QE2's bow anchors for the 1977-1980 period are correct.
