46 years ago today! Five of the world's six largest liners all in one spot; only Queen Elizabeth was missing.

David, fantastic image!! Where did you get it? I would love to use it as my wallpaper.

BTW, the two oldest ships in that image are the ones that are still around today.

This was Raffaello's maiden call in New York and it is pictured on the right while Michelangelo is on the left, recognizable in this picture by the top aft mast which has been painted black. Despite the unique design of the funnels, there still wasn't enough lift to prevent the aft masts from getting coated in soot. Raffaello's mast would later get the same treatment. I had sailed on Michelangelo a few weeks earlier from New York to Naples and would return on Raffaello's second westbound transatlantic voyage.

Absolutely stunning. I love the photo; it's as if it had been taken today. I'd rather these ships than the ones we have now. Sorry, but I do feel these had personality all of their own. True, they aren't people, but the ones who worked hard to put them together; put the life into them as we knew them. Thank you for sharing it.

I think most ship lovers would agree w/you. Today most ships are closer to appliances-functional w/ease of assembly (as are most automobiles) compared to the era when the exterior design was just as important as the interior design.

Yes, Rex. A very big irony considering that both vessels managed to escape the breakers torch. Let's hope that the Big U prevails towards it new role. If not, it will join the SS Norway at Alang.

As I stare at that picture above, I ask myself, if I only had one opportunity on that day in 1965 to embark on only one of those ships across the Atlantic, which would I choose and why.

I'd choose to cross on Queen Mary, because I think she had the most personality, and because QM is the ship where my interest in liners and ships began.
