Hi All,

I don’t believe I ever posted a report of this model project.
Anyway…a couple of months ago I started this scratch build model project of Zim Liner SHALOM. Quite a modern ship in it’s days and close family to the ss FRANCE. Hard to find visual material and info on the ship, especially from her early years, just a handful of stuff can be found on the internet. Never the less a fascinating model subject.

It’s in an advanced stage of completion so I’ll post some recent pictures of the model.
For those on facebook can view and read a complete report on my page.

Looks good Onno! I was able to visit her in Bermuda when she was DORIC with Home Lines. I was impressed with the ship but there was no indoor pool like STATENDAM had (the ship I was on!). Those things are important to a kid. LOL.

Anyway nice job.

We used to go aboard her as visitors in Port Everglades when she was DORIC in the early '80s; it was easy to do and I was aboard several times. Never dreamed that a few years later I would be her Chief Purser, as REGENT SUN!

Rich,
How long did you work for Regent? Was it right up to the end? I can only imagine it was a very interesting and enriching experience.

As the Shalom her interiors were what is called Tel Aviv modern. Much of the artwork was from Yacov Agam.

I only worked for Regency Cruises for a year (this was still a few years before the end) before I left for Crown Cruise Line.

Rich,
Did you only work on the Sun or other Regent ships too? Was Regent a good company to work for or not so much? I sure do miss these smaller companies like Regent, Dolphin, Premier, and Chandris Fantasy that operated these former classics as second hand cruise ships.

Not really at all. Agam only did one work of art which was on the forward stairway and his was by no means the best on the ship.

In the aft lounge there were two works by Ben Shan which are today in a museum in the USA. He was the best artist represented on the ship bu the ship was full of art by Israeli artists, some well known and some budding.

The interiors were modern as built but very French and some Scandinavian influences.

... And Ernie there was an indoor pool. The Israeli's had it decorated with a Hebrew lettering pattern which they took off and Home Lines just slapped some tiles up so it was always funny to look at. As I recall Royal finally redid the space to make it nice again.

Are you sure about the indoor pool? I distinctly remember there not being one. Mind you I'm reaching back into the memory banks over 30 years ago! Damn I'm getting old.

I'm going to have to dig out one of my Home Lines brochures.

I sailed the Doric several times. She was my favorite Homes Lines Cruises' ship. I always liked the stern changes that Royal Cruise Line did.

There sure was an indoor pool, located way down on "Sauna Deck" -- it remained in place until the ship sank. You can see it on the deck plans for any incarnation of the ship.

We're talking about Regency Cruises, not Regent, which is another company. Most of my stint there was aboard the SUN, but I also did a couple of voyages in both the SEA and the STAR. I had previously sailed in SEA as a passenger, and was also a passenger aboard the STAR when she sailed as both STATENDAM and RHAPSODY.

Regency was very much a home-spun operation, like most of the lines at that time. Not as well-structured or corporate as nowadays, and it made working the ships difficult at times. This was in the days before Internet and e-mails, so we relied on Telex messages from the home office, which could be cryptic.

I had previously worked with the Italian officers aboard Carnival ships, which could be trying, but it really seemed like a pain to work with the Greeks aboard the Regency ships! (Maybe because I was the only American officer on board.)

Funny you should bring that up about communicating to the home office. I was doing some research on Regency not long ago and in the files I found the fax from the Captain of the Regent Star to the home office. To paraphrase it says, "we were just arrested by the French authorities. Now what?"

Its a funny read because he is stuck in France faxing the office with an obvious level of frustration.

They do get the ship released but by the time she reaches Greece the firm is gone and no one is there to handling the landing of the passengers. The representative from the bank ends up acting as the port agent to help get all the passengers ashore and on planes home after Regency goes under.

Hmm. Not sure why I don't recall this and distinctly remember "my" ship having one and DORIC not. Oh well, it was over 30 years ago and I only visited the ship once in Bermuda. Funny though I remember a lot of details about DORIC from that one visit. I do remember loving the outdoor pools better than STATENDAM.
