NAL: Chandris sold Atlantis in October 1972, about a year before the fuel shortages caused by the arab oil embargo started after the 1973 Yom Kippur war. But she was definitely a gas guzzler because of her weight since she was built as a troopship (General WP Richardson).

quote:Originally posted by NAL: After she left Chandris I think she was used mainly on short cruises to The Bahamas. Wasn't she also used very late in her career as a world cruiser for The World Cruise Co. or some such? I am not sure she ever made a cruise for them and if so, perhaps just one or two.
As EMERALD SEAS, this was reportedly the only time that ship ever made a profit for her owners. A short, 100-mile crossing to the Bahamas, spending a day and night tied up, helped to save on her heavy fuel costs.
Later in life she became the OCEAN EXPLORER I for the World Cruise Company, but her world cruise was cancelled due to mechanical difficulties and passengers flown home from Europe. The company acquired another ship which ended that cruise in Tahiti when the company folded, stranding nearly 200 passengers there!
