The new Maurizio Eliseo book: Michelangelo e Raffaello: La fine di un 'epoca has just been published, and if it is half as good as his Andrea Doria book, it should be fantastic. It is written in Italian though. I just ordered it from an Italian on-line book seller that I use.

I just wish it had been available last summer when I was there. I did pick up Paolo Valenti's Conte di Savoia book in addition to his book about the original Lloyd Triestino Victoria of the 1930's. Cheers!

Thanks for this information. This book has been a long time coming. I'm glad it is finally here and have just placed my order. It will be interesting to see what Maurizio is adding to our knowledge of these fine ships.

Conte di Savoia

May I ask what wen site you use to order your books from. I use ibs.it as I find their shipping rates to Canada most reasonable. If I know I am going to Italy, I have books shipped to my relatives, and the shipping is usually free.

Because I have ordered with them before, i got an email for a 9 Euro discount, which brought the price of the book down to 60 Euros plus shipping. I assume that you have Valenti's Conte di Savoia? Cheers!

I looked into ordering the book directly from Hoepli as I had purchased another book from them but found that they were more expensive than ordering it from IBS.it which was recommended by a poster on CruiseCritic. Am I correct in assuming that was you?
I purchased Eliseo's book on Andrea Doria in Italy and think he did a great job with that. I know enough Italian to more or less understand it.
Actually I don't have the book on Conte Di Savoia. Do you recommend it? I do have both builder's books for Michelangelo and Raffaello, so it's hard to imagine that Maurizio will have much more information but this is a must-have book for me. I made several trips on both these ships and will always remember the wonderful times aboard these vessels. And the artwork!!

A great book about an equally great subject (or 2 for that matter) I collaborated with Maurizio Eliseo some months ago to produce a list of contemporary liner illustrations for in the book.

Onno...thank you for the tease....

Conte...yes that was my posting on Cruise Critic. I thoroughly enjoy the Paolo Valenti books as he focuses on ships from Trieste (where my parents are from).

I really like the Conte Di Savoia book, and the Victoria book that I mentioned. Two years ago, also picked up Valenti's Le Quattro Sorelle - it is about the Saturnia, Vulcania, Oceania, and Neptunia. Hmm on that trip I also brought back Gio Ponti Le Navi...it covers a variety of Italian Line and LLoyd Triestino ships that he designed interiors for.

That was also the trip for the Andrea Doria Book, Sixty Years of Cruising With Costa, and a small (and not heavy) book called I colossi del mare - by Giovanni Sbisa. He was an Italian Line captain - a book with several fun chapters - like when the King of Marocco crossed on the Raffaello.

Those were the days...only two short years ago - when you could bring two pieces of heavy luggage bag with no charge. Cheers!

I wouldn't hold my breath for an English version--it was speculated that there would be one for his fantastic ANDREA DORIA book, but that never came to pass.

Thanks, Rich. I could order the Italian version, but how much I can read is doubtful. Seems as though a large market is missing out without an English version. Let's hope there a change of heart.

I know, it's a shame if there is not to be an English version for these ships, so well known in North America. But it probably boils down to economics and perhaps the authors just don't think it would be worthwhile to re-issue these books in English, for a potentially small market.

Nearly all of my best, most lavish ocean liner books are in French, Dutch, Italian, and German; no English versions available.

My copy arrived yesterday from Milano and I've been pouring through its pages trying to use my rudimentary knowledge of Italian to translate. There are lots of interesting pictures, some which I've never seen before, and then there are many of the crew, some of whom I recognize from my trips aboard the twins and Leonardo da Vinci. There is a healthy helping of nostalgia in this volume. It is so complete that it records each sailing made by the ships as well as biographies of each of the captains. Bravo Maurizio!

I have been working my way through this hefty volume, enjoying every bit of it (I do speak and read Italian, which helps.) It's done in much the same format as his wonderful ANDREA DORIA book from 2006. Loads of photos, previously unseen, with the ships' interiors and artworks documented. The best book ever on these vessels!

It's not inexpensive, but for those who love these ships and are waiting for an English version, do not miss out. Many people waited for the English version of the DORIA book, which never came about.

Waiting the postman for john Maxtone-Graham book, during the week from Christmas to New Years Eve I read the book by Maurizio Eliseo and Simone Bandini.
They were really seven wonderful days. Michelangelo and Raffaello book is printed on high quality paper and there are hundreds of unseen and interesting photos. Texts are interesting too and I hope the book will be traslated in the future to permit the reading to you

On these vessels two good books to have were printed in 1965 to celebrate the entering in service of the Raffaello and the Michelangelo.
