I just uploaded an 8mm movieshot I recorded in 1981 (?), QE2 in the fjords! Notice how she reduce speed when she pass our village and then speed up again:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQx3aOxeOY4

Unfortunately the quality is not the best on this 29 year old movie

Great video but the year is wrong. The year was 1983 when QE2 had the traditional Cunard livery. The prior year her funnel had been painted Cunard Red and the hull was pebble grey. The dark hull paint returned in 1983. She had that look for approx. one year before another refit when the aft decks were re-configured w/the Magrodome and large twin tenders.

Correct about it being 1983. Good catch.

However, QE2 had that look for a little under 6 months from June 1983 until her late 1983 refit when the Magrodome and those lousy tenders (Alpha and Beta) were added.

Thank You for updating this info, the expertise among this forums members is always impressive!

The 8mm movies have been stored i a box for many years, and not very well marked. All of them where recorded in the years 1979-83.

Here is one more shot of the QE2 from these movies, I think this one is older (could this be the 1981 movie?) It shows the QE2 passing early in the morning on her way to Geiranger about 1 hr away, and going back the same evening:

Here is another one of the QE2 from the same time period, this also include a Royal Viking Line ship, a russian ship and Federico C (?)

All of these recordings where made from the balcony of the house where I grew up. We could watch the cruiseships passing almost every day during the summer months.

The first one with QE2 sporting blue boot topping is either from 1979 or 1980. I cannot say which for sure because I cannot see whether or not QE2's stem anchor is still in place at the bow. If it is, then it's 1979. If it's not, then it's 1980. QE2's stem anchor was removed in New York on October 7, 1979 and was carried as a spare on the foredeck until the mid 1990's. The howser hole was plated over in QE2's 1979 end-of year refit.

The second one is probably 1981. The red boot topping was restored in QE2's 1980 end-of-year refit but her underwater hull remained blue until the mid-80's. I thought I saw a hint of blue at the water line near the bow. (I have a post card showing QE2 in a fjord in 1981 where the blue actually shows). Once again the stem anchor should be missing..

The only other year possible for the 2nd movie is 1978 because the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth suites are present. In this case QE2's stem anchor would still be at the bow.

Yes, it's the Federico C. The Soviet ship looks like one of the Mikhail Kalinan class, perhaps the MK itself because I saw her a couple of times while on QE2 in the early 1980's.

Nice to see one of the Royal Viking sisters before the stretch. I was on before and after.....preferred them before the stretch, although I think they were better sea boats after.

That's pretty common in Oil Embargo-era QE2 pics I've seen. It only made sense to raise her trim inbound like container ships do when any fuel savings could save real money. France used to ride high in the '70s too.

I'm also sure you could get away with accomplishing this by pumping out your oily water tanks and any other form of liquid ballast (potable or otherwise) in open seas in those days.
