Pier 40 the Holland America Line New York terminal opened in 1963. This Pier was the biggest and most modern of it's kind in New York. The Pier could handle 2 large liners and 2 freighters at the same time. Here two pictures of the Pier 40.

Picture 1 there is a guest the Dutch colonial liner MS ORANJE from the Netherland Line (Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland) on here round the world line service. As you know other lines also used the Pier such as Norwegian, P&O, German Atlantic.

Picture 2, busy day TSS ROTTERDAM, TSS STATENDAM the combi liner MS NOORDAM or WESTERDAM and 1 freighter.

And a wonderful pier it was! It was far and away NYC's finest and most convenient. It's a pity that it's closed and is no longer used for the purpose for which it was built.

It is now a soccer field and parking lot. What a shame. The should move the Cruise port down there.

As Maasdam said, Norwegian America Line used the pier often. NAL often sailed from a pier or two north of Pier 40, but when available they used Pier 40. I also remember seeing some Grace Line ships at Pier 40 too. It may have been Prudential-Grace Line at the time. It seems a waste to use it as a soccer field!
