This interesting ling was posted on Landgangen.se today. It shows the internal and external condition of the Gripsholm 1957 before the tow to India and pictures from the tow and the actual sinking. i didn´t now that this pictures existed before?Gripsholm

EXCELLENT find! I had seen these before either. Lots of wonderful pictures of her in her final state, and sad pictures of her in her final moments. Beautiful ship.

Great find! I remember sailing around south america on Regent Sea. I don't remember much other than my cabin had a huge tub, louvered doors and a sink outside the bathroom near the bed. Sad to see the pool, I have photos in the hot tub.

Thanks for sharing that! I had never seen the photos of her sinking, either. I sailed on REGENT SEA as both a passenger and an officer, and have many fond memories of her from the 1980s.

Was invited to a nice lunch for travel agents on the REGENT SEA, it was wonderful. Sad, there wasn't a photo of her dining room, she had a nice staircase that went down into it. I got to see her for the last time when we pulled out of Tampa for a 7 day cruise on the CELEBRATION. I'm glad I got photos of her as we pulled past her. She looked so sad sitting there and I can see why by the photos taken onboard. Any idea what caused her sinking? And thank you for the URL, I didn't know these photos existed. Great find.

Deb, there are some photos of her dining rooms; see under "Condition of Vessel" Page 1 and Page 2.

To me it looks that some of the areas aorund the enclosed promenade are damaged by fire? Or ist it just stripped areas from the halted rebuilding to casino ship? She looks to be in bad condition and can understand why it was not recomended to tow her to europe for refurbishing without major repairs done in the US.

If there are any scortch marks it's probably just from a welders torch. I noticed some around a companionway opening in one of the promenade photos

Although I sailed on her younger sister, Kungsholm, several times, I only sailed Gripsholm once. She was preferred over Kungsholm by many SAL regulars including the actress, Helen Hayes.She was beautifully served and had an unusually warm, cozy atmosphere. When fully booked, SAL usually limited her pax to 400-430.....and she often carried fewer. Space glorious space!

The only time I saw Regent Sea was in Skagway. Unfortunately this was as she hit us (Island Princess) as she was attempting to berth. Her stern hit just aft of the aft pax foyer causing serious damage to the Pacific Lounge/Bar, A deck cabins immediately below and slight damage to F deck cabins. It also damaged the davits above R deck on Prom deck. Her stern pentrated about 2 feet into IP.

She sustained damage to her stern railing and plating.

Obviously our cruise was cancelled, pax flown home and we sailed to drydock in Seattle from where we had just sailed after a 2 week refit resuming service about a week later.

As a termporary measure (which lasted a year or so) the lounge windows were plated over making the lounge very dark.

I also remember her as Navarino - she had a great reputation during this time but went downhill under Regent looking quite tatty when I saw her in Skagway.

Thanks, a great find ... very sad to see such a (once-) beautiful ship in such terrible condition though.

My grandparents sailed to Alaska in REGENT SEA in I guess around 1990. They loved their huge cabin and hated just about everything else. That was their first and last time with Regency....

Regent Sea was anchored next to us (on Crown Princess) back in 1991 and she was a great looking ship.

I saw her again on a trip to Tampa when she was laid-up looking very weathered.

Oh yes, Rich; I did go there. I just don't recall seeing photos of her beautiful staircase. And I agree with Lasuvidaboy, just ashame to see her in her weathered condition like that in Tampa.

Most agree she was pristine under the SAL flag. I had one friend who sailed her as Navarino and she was in good condition then too. They had increased her pax capacity so she seemed more crowded than as Gripsholm.

That has got to be one of the saddest photos to say goodbye for a ship. SS NORWAY could have gotten that.
