Here is the REINA DEL MAR, as built for Pacific Steam Navigation Co., in 1956:

In 1964 the liner was rebuilt as a cruise ship for Union-Castle Line. The large white block forward of her funnel housed the cinema. The ship was scrapped in 1975:

All of my deck plans for this ship are too large to scan and post.

Any idea why the ship was relatively short-lived?

Union-Castle was reaching the end of their passenger operating days, and, like dozens of other liners from the 1950s, REINA DEL MAR suddenly found herself expensive to operate, antiquated, and soon out of work.

The period from roughly 1971 to 1976 saw scores, if not hundreds, of passenger ships go to the breakers--every week it seemed like one or two more were gone, mostly to Kaohsiung in those days. People whine and scream about the loss of one or two classic ships in recent years (NORWAY, INDEPENDENCE, etc.) but had they (the people) been around some 35-40 years ago they would have had their hearts broken several times a month!

The ship was pretty much sailing full till the end but the increase in the price of fuel oil in 1097 was a major blow to all shipping companies at the time. Reina was also noted as having some quite severe corrosion of her tank tops which would have been expensive to repair and hard to justify given her marginal economics after the fuel price increases. This corrosion also made her less than attractive to other operators who may well have kicked the tyres. She was without a doubt one of the best looking ships of her era as built.

That should read the oil price increase in 1973.

She was a great looking liner as built. The addition of the boxy deckhouse forward of the funnel (which housed the cinema) and the built-out forward superstructure destroyed her lovely lines. The Union-Castle livery did'nt help her looks either

Naw. That was Richard the Lionheart/Prince John time. Braveheart was about 100 years later.
