I was just visiting the shipgeek.com web site and for the first time saw the color renderings for the redesigned public rooms and exterior pool decks of the "new" SS United States. These drawings were done in advance of her proposed return to service in 1980 when she was owned by Richard Hadley. There is also a photo of a suite that was refurbished to show what to expect after the rebuild. The suite looks stunning and I don't think it would look out of place on one of todays new Celebrity Cruises ships. There are also a few pictures of a model of the ship showing her proposed paintwork with an all-white hull, white funnels with blue and red stripes looking somewhat similar to what NCL did on the SS Norway funnels when she entered service. She was to also have a large eagle (it reminds me of the US Mail eagle logo) painted on each side of the bow. I think the look would have been fine but I'm sure some people might have preferred her with a dark hull. Back in 1978 or 79 when I was a teen I was lucky enough to receive one of the original brochures that described her reentry to service. I was a kid in love with anything to do with passenger ships and collected as many cruise line brochures and posters that I could get my hands on. Even at that time I knew that this beautiful and very detailed brochure was something special. This however is the first time I have seen actual drawings of the public rooms as they would have looked as these were not included in my brochure. I'm not an interior designer but I truly believe had this refurbishment gone forward she would have looked stunning back in 1980 and I think most of these public room renderings would even work on one of today's newbuilds. We are now 30 years down the road since the return than never happened. It makes me wonder if things had worked out would she still be sailing after all this time. Thirty years have now passed since the dream of her return and she yet by some miracle she is still with us, in a very deep sleep at her berth, barely alive but still with us. What a shame her 1980 return to the seas never came to pass. She would have been beautiful.

I too received that promotional brochure when I was a teen and from what I read about you I'm the same...a young teen in love with passenger ships...I remember starting my brochure collection and having to fill out the little bochure request forms from magazines. My parents would wonder why all these cruise/shipping lines were sending these to me...the united states is one of the best along with a few more I'll keep for a long time...jeff

I was friends with the design team, and in fact I spent an entire day with that design team aboard the Big U in Norfolk in 1979. I also made several trips to Seattle to visit the design team and I got to meet Richard Hadley. I saw that model first-hand and took some pictures of it. I also rebuilt my little SS United States model to that design. Ultimately the design team was going to paint the hull a dark blue rather than the white hull, had the project moved forward. It was this design team that also gave me a set of the 6 foot long blue prints to the SS United States and I have all the brochures they produced as well.

Please join us on Thursday, July 1 in Philadelphia for a grand celebration in honor of the 58th anniversary of the record-breaking maiden voyage of our national flagship! While the exact schedule of events is still being finalized, current plans are to gather in the IKEA complex across the street from the SS United States‘ current pier. Plenty of music and refreshments will be on hand, and our special program will culminate in a recreation of artist Robert Wogan’s lighting of the ship’s funnels, bridge, and radar mast. Weather permitting, we will also have a special outdoor screening of SS United States: Lady in Waiting. It will be a very special evening, and we hope you can join us. Please stay turned for further details and updates.

Tentative Schedule for July 1 National Flagship Celebration

7:00 Music and Refreshments
8:00 Special Announcement and Awards
8:30 Lighting of SS United States‘ funnels
8:45 Outdoor Screening of SS United States: Lady in Waiting

I wonder what it would cost to sandblast those funnels and apply a new coat of USL red, white and blue paint?

The cost would be a bit big I guess , and why would anyone do it if there is not a real future plan for the complete ship?

I think it could be done to restore the SSUS and tie her up at New York somewhere. I actually have an idea for a company in the travel business that could save a few liners in the process. I have 2 investors that are interested but I could use some more. Is Donald Trump around here somewhere ???
