"David Pressler has penned a wonderful new book about the REGAL EMPRESS, titled "OLYMPIA, The Life and Times of a Greek Goddess".......Lavish use of photos, builders' images, detailed deck plans and lyrical text that puts the reader right back on board."

Just got my copy and has quite a few of Linerrich's photos.

Looked over the GA plans and surmise the broken up layout was to pack in 1400 passengers in a 23k ton ship.

It made little sense to put the Upper deck public rooms aft when they could have been midship and cabins aft?

An interesting quirk is the port main deck forward cabins only accessible by a single staircase off the Main foyer. They were originally cabins for 10 crew members each. Commodore converted them into doubles and put in the staircase. The corridor was split since the inner one is a main companionway from the midship galley to the bow.

It became a shop and covered with K-mart store fittings

came from

The b/w photos of tourist reading lounge do not even come close to rendering the beauty of the woods here. What vulgarians to cover it up. It could have been converted to a shop and left the original panelling in. The elegance would have commanded better prices than the K-mart fittings put in by Commodore.

came from

Where I had many a good meal

n the ship's conversion to CARIBE I, the large dining room was converted into cabins but the paneling was left in place and covered

Thank you for posting this. I must get a copy of this book. I wouldn't mind getting something from the Regal Empress either.

The interview was interesting & I also enjoyed this associated youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukOPfU4DYsk

I received my copy of this book, yesterday. It is a lovely book with lots of good pictures & an interesting history. I was amazed to note that several of the features on board the Regal Empress, which we thought to be original, were actually from 1980s Caribe refits!

I just wanted to take a second to say thank you to everyone who bought a copy of my book. I have been both surprised and delighted by the interest and the feedback I've received on my efforts. I had initially printed only 100 copies because I wasn't sure of the interest, but wow 5 months later and they are almost gone. I've ordered a second batch for anyone else who is interested, but that will probalby be the last of the print run for awhile.

I appreciate the help that I received from many of you on this forum either through photos or other information. Next year I hope to start my second endeavor on a couple of Italian sisters - Marconi and Galileo so I may be back asking for assistance once again.

Thank you again for your help. - David

First I would like to thank everyone who has purchased one of my Olympia books over the past year. It was my first writing endeavour and the feedback I received from everyone was very encouraging for writing future books. I found it interesting to see the various places and countries of people that were interested in the book. I think the biggest surprise is the large number I ended up sending to Canada. I actually got introduced to entire families that immigrated onboard the Olympia to Canada back in the 1950's. They were even kind enough to send copies from their family albums. If only I could have put them into the book. I'm glad that I was able to bring some light and history to a little ship that could after so many years afloat.

The reason for the post is to inform anyone who may have thought about purchasing a book but hasn't that only 26 books remain. Once they are gone there will be no more. It was a limited print run of 160 copies. If interested please contact me at: oceanlinerpress@prodigy.net

Thanks again to everyone who helped me realize a personal dream of publishing a book enjoyed by many.

David
