beautiful ad art (1959-1971) by Art Fitzpatrick and Van Kaufman

The ship looks like it was made up from one of the early NCL ships and a 50's Italian ship.

This is Paquet's 1966 built Renaissance pictured with a '68 or '69 Pontiac. Funny, both of them are gone now.

It's a 1969 Pontiac Catalina convertible. There still a few of them around today but you mostly see the upper-end Bonneville convertible.

Did anyone notice the ship docked behind Renaissance? At first glance Victoria came to mind, but I haven't looked at it too hard yet. I will have to look at a few pics to figure this one out. From just looking at it now it looks like she may be docked stern to stern with Ren. as it looks like a white mast next to (forward?) of the blue funnel. Can't tell if the tall object on the other side is part of the ship or not. It seems too far to the left to be something on the pier, yet if it were a mast I wonder what the dark object at the top is?

I'm gonna have to wait to figure it out any further as it is getting late.
If I know this fine group here at CT as well as I think I do, the answer will be here when I awake tomorrow

Hmmm...Was Romanza's funnel tapered at the back like the one in the pic? (Wild guess)

Best to all...
Michael

Ok, I didn't go to bed. I had to do a little investigating...

I looked at pics of the Victoria.
She had a mast above her bridge and also a mast on the forward part of the funnel. Also she had two cranes/mast on her aft decks which seem to be in the picture. The only problem is that if the ship is indeed facing in the opposite direction (whatever ship she is, the angle of the funnel and the placement of the white mast seem to indicate this) the mast on the funnel is not in the correct place in the picture. It matches the one on The Victoria except for the dark disk at the top.
I'm sure that the artist wasn't too concerned with the ship in the background being that this is an ad for Pontiac and not a ship or shipping line. If it was a Chandris ship he would probably omit the "X" because it is a "brand".

Now, after looking at pictures and posting here, I realize just how tired I am! If I were half awake I would have remembered an hour ago that the Vic was still with Incres in 1966!

Michael

What IS interesting is the detail that went into re-creating ms Renaissance in this ad. The Pontiac ads of the 1960s were works of art w/amazing detail. These beautifully painted adverts were replaced w/photo ads by the early 1970s and the era of unique ads (and automobiles) disappeared.

Yes, they were beautiful ads. And the detail is remarkable regarding the Renassaince. Even the second ship is quite detailed considering the distance.
I also am a fan of the old car ads of the '60s. As a kid I remember my Dad had a huge collection of Nat. Geo magazines that I used to search through for all the shipping ads. The automobile ads were amazing! I especially loved the luxury cars. The Caddies, Lincolns, Mercs., Chryslers, all pictured in front of a beautiful mansion or a lavish party or restuarant. As a kid I "knew" I would be rich one day and have a big luxury car.
Didn't quite work out that way.
But I did save all those ads I cut out of the magazines before they were disposed of!
