Can any HAL experts or those with access to an old Shipbuilder, perhaps, shed some light on the beautiful glass from the STATENDAM 57's indoor pool. I strongly believe it must be by Akkermans, who did the stairs on the ROTTERDAM. The technique, style and materials are almost identical.

Here is a link to what I am talking about:

Many thanks!

I don't know anything about the pool on the old Statendam but she certainly was a gorgeous ship. I enjoyed Stephen Card's painting of this ship, on board the Eurodam. We passed it on the way to our cabin & I always admired it.

I did enjoy the historical experience of swimming in the indoor pools on QE2 & Saga Rose. The one on Saga Ruby was always closed when I went to try it!

Graham.

Peter the interior designer fore the Statendam was J.A. van Tienhoven (It's possible that the art on board was commissioned) He also designed the interiors fore the Ryndam ('51) and Maasdam ('52) and was part of the design team fore the Rotterdam ('59) I did some research and cold not find any other designer that worked on the Statendam. In that line you see the resembling between the 4 1950 HAL liners.

Greetings Ben.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for your reply. I'm a huge fan of Tienhoven, especially his tourist class dining room on BERGENSFJORD, which was much like ROTTERDAM's in many ways. I did get the info confirmed about the STATENDAM's pool, by the way. The glass panels were designed by Willem Akkermans (same artist who did the glass panels in the forward stairtower on the ROTTERDAM) and executed by Van Tetterode. The overall designer of the pool area was Cornelius Engelen. Not sure if Tienhoven supervised the entire ship or not but there is clearly a similarity between the STATENDAM's original look and ROTTERDAM's.

In Photoshop, I did manage to piece together the various elements of the glass -- sadly, much of the panel is missing but the elements are really quite stunning. Don't know how to post photos here but the panel can be see at:

Peter, with many thanks to former HAL captain Leo Hubrecht for forwarding the builder's info...

Hi again, Ben!

Sorry, I didn't read your post clearly. Indeed, great to know Tienhoven did STATENDAM. I guess he had a group of designers working under him who hired the various artists, like Akkermans and ten Hoedt, whose work was integrated into the ship.

Anyway, I wasn't doubting you. Also, I really appreciate that you took the time to respond to my question. Thanks again!

All my best,

Peter

Hello!!!

When the STATENDAM was built in 1957 did she have an outdoor Imside Promenade Deck ? When she was given an overhaul to begin cruise service in 1972 was the Indoor Promenade Deck taken in?
I know that in 1988 they extended that deck aft !
