I was checking QM2's transatlantic voyages, and I found something strange, corroborating Malcolm's stand on the heavy prices for brits.

On april 29th 2010 QM2 departs for a transatlantic voyage to Southampton (7 days) and Hamburg (9 days).

Though it is two days longer to Hamburg, the price is cheaper than the price for Southampton, starting at 300 EUR in inside cabin, which is a lot.

Some specific reason why it is more expensive to Southampton ? It can't be because of capacity or something, it is the same voyage, and the same cabins...

Strange

Could it be the docking fees are much higher in Southampton?

Many of the old classics, such as Regal Empress and SSNorway stopped calling on NYC since the rock-bottom fares could not cover the docking fees, stevedores, and local payoffs required there, and much cheaper to deploy from Miami, Phila, or Baltimore.

It's probably to encourage people to continue on to Hamburg. If they get off in Southampton, they probably can't re-sell the cabin for 2 days, thus losing the onboard revenue.

I could not find the Jan QM2 trans on the UK Cunard web site that Frank said was a bargain (for American's anyway). Maybe I was not looking in the right place?

There is a whole variety of cruise combinations on that crossing and the ensuing cruises. Cunard has inventory alotted to sell for A) New York to Southampton or Hamburg, B) a nine night round trip from Southampton to Hamburg, Elsinore, Oslo, back to Hamburg, and then Southampton , C) a five night round trip out of Hamburg to Elsinore and Oslo, and D) a west-bound crossing from Hamburg or Southampton back to New York. The five night Hamburg round trip is now waitlisted for most of the room categories, but plenty of room remains for the other offerings.

The QM2's January 2010 east-bound crossing is carved out of the World Cruise and is marketed as a segment of the that cruise and not a transatlantic crossing. God and Cunard only knows why!

Malcolm, are you thinking about that crossing? We'd finally get to meet! I got a wonderful room, and plan on hosting a cocktail party or two there.

I looked the other day too Malcolm. We appear to be able to do various segments of the WCs but not just the transat part on either QM2 or QV. Most odd.
There are no transats available to us until April.

I did note various TAs had had the transats advertised with additional days in NYC etc previously, but these have all been removed now.

Frank:

1) Firstly the trans does not exist for us Brits.

2) Secondly I have a cash flow situation at present.

Our meeting may well have to wait.

Cunard are simply punishing us Brits for not tipping enough!

The Jan 2010 transats do not show up on the Cunard web site for anyone. They don't show up on the US site either, but you can certainly book them here.

I don't think they ever did in the past either. The first time I've seen these show up on the web site as separate voyages are the Jan 2011 crossings on QUEEN VICTORIA and QUEEN ELIZABETH, which you can even book online (at least from the US).

Malcolm and Pam, if you're interested, phone Cunard.

(I'm "interested" but probably shouldn't spend the money ... so tempting though....)
