Greetings Ben.

I prefer some of the design ellements of "A" thogh if it were in color I hear it might be a bit gaudy. "B" reminds me too much of a lobby or a dining hall at a university in the 70's

In color I am not sure. In b and w I like "B." I think we are looking at CGT's FLANDRE. I was only a child when I sailed on her with family, but I think I am correct. I remember the main lounge in photo A.

Indeed ss Flandre 's 1st class lounge in A and the tourist class lounge aboard the same ship in B. SS Flandre was not the best decorated ship of the French Line (her sistership Antilles was far much nicer Imho). I prefer the B one, for the confort feeling. The seats in the 1st clas lounge are just dreadful....

Colour would make all the difference. I suspect I would be more impressed initially with the appearance of room A but would feel more at home spending time in B. I think Costa filled in the well above the First Class lounge later in her days as Carla C to add a room to the space on the deck above. (A cinema?)

I like the layout of A w/the raised center section, attractive light fixtures and lovely tapestry/mural but the chairs do look rather uncomfortable and are covered w/a busy fabric. The chairs (and rug) in room B are fantastic so I'd place the chairs from 'B' in 'A' and cover them in two different fabrics.

If i remember well the 1st class lounge was a rather unpopular room aboard Flandre ans was replaced by a cinema during a 1963/1964 refit. A new small lounge, in a SS France style decor, was created in the former gym area just next to the very popular smocking room. The same operation was done aboard the SS Antilles.

Tne new first class lounge aboard ss Flandre/ Antilles. The 50's cozyness gone....

Well here goes, IMHO...............

They are both naff, a mix of design elements (mostly retro fake Room A), some items look cheap (both), the mix of different furniture doesn't seem to be cohesive and probably bought at a 1950's Ikea (Room B) and it looks like the furniture was just dumped without any thought.........well best leave it off now before I upset too many people.

Not as bad as some of Farcus' cock ups though.

Sorry !

Or the furnishings and fixtures could have been custom made for the ship.

I'll also vote for 'neither'. One is to flowery and the other too sterile.

Yep, the centre section of the Lounge became a two deck high cinema with a balcony on the upper level, which must have been quite small. Costa later converted the lower level of the cinema into a casino which extended to the ships Port side and the upper level gained a floor and became a card room. The cinema itself then reappeared on the Port side of the former First Class dining room and the former Tourist Class dining room appeared to become to only formal dining venue at that point. Looking at deck plans over the years Costa never seemed to stop tinkering with their ships.

Well we wait until there are more CT members to be shoot In bulk it safe some work

OT. I don't find the lounge 1 chairs bad looking. Maybe in another bigger room they would look better. They remind me of some furniture from Normandie.

Greetings Ben.

The first-class lounge looks overbearing and stuffy.

The tourist-class lounge looks vaguely institutional. Only the carpet saves it from looking like a hospital waiting room.

I'm not sure which is worse.

If the photos were in color the tourist lounge would look better. There is some really nice wood panelling and marquetry.

First class lounge in color would look vulgarian.

In art school my Design History professor gave us the blind taste test of the SS Paris which was 3 classes and we all liked the tourist class lounge best and from an objective design standpoint a better room. It is the case here: tourist lounge is a better design.

My choice: Exhibit A, very classy. I would love to sit in there waiting for first sitting dinner with a very mild aperitif. With a handsome Dutchman.
