The Marine Traffic AIS maps are now showing that the ss Oceanic is registered in Panama instead of Malta.

Her new call sign is given as 3EUQ5.

She arrived in Izmir this morning, Sunday 4th October, 2009, on her present voyage for the Japanese Peace Movement

If that's the case, she's back where she began. As Home Lines Cruises' OCEANIC, she was registered in Panama.

Hello,

SS Oceanic has changed both flag (Panama now), Call Sign (3EUQ5) AND has transfered her classification survey from to another IACS member (from BV to Germanischer Lloyd). It was done between 2009-09-08 and 2009-10-03.

Why ?

I expect the new owners of the ship did not want the same arrangements that Pullmantur Cruises had before they bought the ship.

I do not think such arrangements will be allowed today for a such steam vessel (if you are talking about technical side).

Different companies have different ways of working.

I expect the new owners checked out the best deals which is what I do with my company every year.

I need to have a 20 million pound public liability insurance, due to the nature of my business operation, so do not wish to pay more for the insurance than is necessary !

I would imagine the benefits of being Panamanian registered v Maltese are greater for an organisation such as Peace Boat, with no taxation and reduced transit tariffs. With the company owning her being based in Panama too there may be even other pros such as the anonymity afforded.

Note she is no longer OCEANIC, but THE OCEANIC.
I cannot see another Panamanian registered vessel named OCEANIC, so don't know why this would be so.
