It has just been noted on another site that that Imperial Majesty has suspended all sailings of the REGAL EMPRESS, and that the ship is being used for hurricane relief on the Gulf Coast. They are probably making more money from the government now than in regular operation, but one wonders if this may spell the end of her cruising service. I.M. has been looking for new tonnage.

Here's a link to Imperial Majesty's website:

Looking at new tonnage? I thought they had bought the Prinsesse Ragnhild.

Though this is too bad I was looking forward to sailing on the Regal Empress sometime this winter..

..

Yes, that was speculated on recently, but I don't think it was ever confirmed. Local word here is that they are also considering the ISLAND ADVENTURE, which is more in line with the size they have been utilizing. Either way, it would be a convenience for them to simply not have REGAL EMPRESS come back after her use in Texas.

Rich,

I plan on attending Sea Trade in March, do you think she will be in service then?

Want to grab her while I can. She is very special since she was my first cruise

Ships returning after being used for storm relief are often in rough condition. IM may not be willing to do the work necessary to return her to pre-storm condition. It may well be the excuse needed to seek out new tonnage. Pity. Hope I'm wrong.

I agree; this stint in Texas will give IM the time to acquire and outfit new tonnage, while still making an income from the government in the meantime. Hate to say it, but it may not make financial sense to refit REGAL EMPRESS for service again so soon before they have to let her go anyway.

Oh thats too bad to hear REGAL EMPRESS will be used for hurricane relief efforts. I was planning on coming out to Florida in January or February!

Any chance Imperial Majesty may try a two ship operation using the REGAL EMPRESS after her loan?

How extensive a refit would she need after being used as a short-term accomodation ship? I would guess some new carpeting but what else?

I assume her crew will be onboard to care for her and that she would'nt have more wear than if she would doing her regular service.

One of the Linerslist members has received a cancellation from Imperial Majesty offering rebooking. When he phoned he was told that the Regal Empress was not coming back and that they would be operating their new ship. Sounds like we may have already missed her.

Matt - who was going in early December...

Probably the same thing that happened to most all of the 'groups'. All talk, no action, expect somebody else to pick up the tab, no plan, big dreams, no budget, high expectations, and a huge dose of reality. She be in Alang soon enough.

What other ship was pulled from service so quickly?

IM did'nt even milk the ocean liner crowd w/a few high priced final sailings.

This is quite true. The most important thing is to have the funds available to buy the vessel when it is retired from service. It makes no sense to talk about saving an oceanliner if the money isn't there. I understand now.

Soon, the Regal Empress will join its old running mate, the SS Topaz, at Alang.

Who knows what will happen to her once the charter ends. She could end up like Britanis at the bottom or Alang or Greece. The Greek option could be alot cheaper than what was done w/ss Rotterdam. I wonder if the Greeks are as neurotic about asbestos that she may have onboard.

If the Regal Empress is purchased for Greece, I doubt that they care about the Asbestos matter. However, only time will tell the fate of the ship.

Reuben is retired. This will not be another SS Norway saga. I'll agree that if there was a serious buyer, it would have been done while the SS Norway was in Germany. Not after the ship was beached at Alang.

No, I don't think that they will be another campaign to save the Regal Empress. What's the point of advocating to save the ship if there is no one with the money to buy her? The same thing with Glasgow, who wanted the SS Topaz for the city. But they didn't have the money to buy her from the Greek owner. No money, no ship.

I have a very bad feeling that the recent skyhigh scrap metal prices, on top of fuel prices, are going to cause a lot of problems in the global economy because the demand are fueled by loan practices which could collasped upon itself. This would cause scrap metal prices to fall quite quickly.

Rueben may have retired but the campaign website to save classic cruise ships is now run by Alex Naughton in the UK.

Exactly, he was claiming a mystery buyer to drag SSNorway off the beach raising false hopes. This and his Karl Rove-ing of NCL is where he lost all credibility.

The Topaz and Regal Empress have original elements, but not nearly complete originals like the Queen Mary 1 and the Rotterdam: both famous A-list ships.

Mardi Gras and Windsor Castle were mostly original but virtually unkown out of shipnut circles.

There is not enough left in Topaz or Regal Empress to make them worthwhile preservation candidates.

The Regal Empress with stacked public rooms and few elevators is a logistical nightmare for conferences and catering. It is hard to separate the hotel from the public rooms. Except for a few cabins on the Promenade and Sun Decks, all of the staterooms are too small for modern hotel standards and would have to be gutted out and rebuilt at great expense.

Topaz has a better layout, but there are 2 original public rooms, rest of the ship has been dis-figured.

These 2 ships it is better to remove the fittings from the classic rooms and re-assemble on land.

On Alex Naughton: he stole many photos and refuses to take them off his site. There was much discussion on LinersList here.

Maybe reinstalled a/b a new ship such as Celebrity did with interior pieces from Olympic and United States.

Greetings Ben.

How can you steal photos if you have not taken the original ?

Perhaps the terminology should be copied !

In your position you should get the facts right !

Using the a copy of a picture/photo (in the case of a webpage it would be a digital copy) without permission of the copyright owner is a violation of the rights of the copyright owner that is equivalent to stealing.

Not only did the illustrious Mr. Naughton "copy" ( ) a lot of photos, he also lifted entire magazine articles and put them on his web site without attribution, giving the impression that he wrote them.

Of course Reuben also used a lot of photos without attribution or permission.

I guess these two were made for each other.
