I've been waiting for this for years and am very happy to see it's happened.

I wish I could have been there but for someone who lives so far away the lack of advance notice really made it impossible. Under ideal circumstances my dad and I would have flown out to see it as it is something we are both very excited about. (Apart from the obvious reasons this is a ship of which he has fond childhood memories.)

What great photos, Ben. Many, many thanks from those of us who could not be there. We look forward to more when you post them. This is indeed a great day in ocean liner history and particularly for HAL lovers.

I think it's a glorious day fore Liner enthusiast HAL lovers or not. An Grand Liner is saved and returned to here home/building port and namesake city. We in Rotterdam saw maritime history made this day (believe me when I say something like this)

Greetings Ben.

Looking good!

My new mission this year is to drag the missus out to Rotterdam-- I'll take care of the lodging arrangements!

This is flat-out amazing. Oh, to have been on that skeleton crew as the ship was arriving...

Score one for the Good Guys!!!!

After all the talk about cost overruns etc., she is finally home where she belongs. I could not be happier.

And why am I so happy? My very first cruise was on the Rotterdam from New York to Nassau in December, 1973. We were supposed to go to Bermuda as well, but they canceled Bermuda because of a spike in fuel prices. Sound familiar? She made an impression that will last a lifetime, and at least I can now go see her again.

The only other Holland America ship I was on, the Volendam met her end at Alang several years ago.

Probably for refurbishment. There is an image from December, 2007 of the repainted davits stacked near the ship at ssrotterdam.net

I think the lifeboats will be making a comeback. How good is this, one saved from the breakers and a good one too.

'The good one' IMO. The others (other than the former Windsor Castle) were heavily facelifted versions of what was. She was worth saving not only for her stunning interiors but also for her near original exterior. Those images could almost have been taken in 1959! Great job Ben!!

They should have made the ROTTERDAM a fully operational, restored ship like the MS PHILIPPINES. I shouldn't ask for too much though . Hopefully one day I will get the chance to visit the ROTTERDAM.

Yes indeed, fantastic photos of a remarkable ship!
Thanks a lot Ben for sharing them.
I dream I will have the opportunity to go and see her for real in future. What a privilege it would be to do that and go aboard for a liner enthusiast!
