Maybe she'll sink under tow. While I don't want any crew member hurt, I'd rather see her sink than reach her destination under the circumstances.

I'm sure she has a collision bulkhead that would keep water from entering the hull. Remember the Stockholm was able to return to NYC after ramming the Andrea Doria and her bow was completely ripped off.

The Topaz may have a collision bulkhead however as it is now the monsoon season around India, which leads to some very rough weather, I do not think she will be moved far without some repairs being carried out.

As she was at anchor at the time of the accident it would appear the other ship was in the wrong and their insurance will have to pay for repairs.

According to a report on LL by member Peter Knego, TOPAZ arrived at Alang on Friday night (July 4th.) Peter, if you're reading this, perhaps you can give us an update and any other info you may have.

Hi Rich,

Yep, it's sadly true. From the images I have seen, it looks like her bow damage was very slightly repaired. She was supposed to beach yesterday but at the last minute the breaker got the "go ahead" from the pilot and in she came on Friday eve's high tide, a trail of black smoke following her. I had a lot of great memories on that remarkable ship and think she had quite a charmed life.

She had a long and full career. She really did outlast her contemporaries (and twin sister) by decades.

Yes, I spent a good portion of the 1980s living and working on her as CARNIVALE. But hey, she had a tremendous run, over 50 years of nearly continuous service. Very few liners have had a record like that.

I only knew her as Queen Anna Maria. She was a warm, cozy ship that always welcomed you back. I spent many vacation days away from school roaming her decks. As several have said, it's sad, but she out lived and out served so many others who were bigger and flashier. Thank you: Empress of Britain, Queen Anna Maria, Carnivale, and Topaz. [I know there were other names, but these are the biggies]

I am really glad to have re-visited her twice

2004 visit to NYC

She was my second cruise as Queen Anna Maria; just 18 months earlier Olympia. They would cruise in tandem from New York to the Carribean.

It is sad to see that another British built passenger ship has been beached at Alang.

She must have had one of the best records for providing a reliable service over the years as even in her latter years I have not seen any reports of her breaking down..

She was the first ship I ever sailed on, and the one I would have most liked to sail again. If ships have lives, she had a happy one.
