This image is taken from a post card in my collection--can anyone name the 4 liners in the photo? Technically there are 5 passenger ships here: bonus point if someone can name the 5th. Another bonus point if you can identify which port this is. And one more point if you can more or less tell what year this was. Good luck!

Well we have teh Sagafjord, Canberra and I think Chitral. Not sure what ship the green hulled one is. As for port, is it Yokohama? Maybe 1970 or so?

I agree with Thad. The fourth liner is the George Anson of the Dominion Far East Line formerly she was a Furness Warran ship Newfoundland sailing I think from Liverpool to Canada. The date I think could well have been 15 March 1966 which was Canberra's maiden visit to Yokohama. I am somewhat cheating as i was looking for the name of the green hulled ship and on page 105 of W Miller's British Ocean Liners a Twilight era 1960 -1985 there is an almost identical picture but taken from the otherside of the wharf. I am still no wiser of the fifth ship nor can I really see it.

Reint, Thad is closer to the mark. The 5th vessel is in the background, black hull, black & blue funnel.

The 5th one looks like it could be one of the M Class of Blue Funnel Line: Machaon, Maron, Melampus, Memnon, Menelaus, or Menestheus . But I can't really tell.

OK guys, well done. The 4 major ships are of course SAGAFJORD, CANBERRA, CHITRAL and GEORGE ANSON. I must admit that at first I thought the 5th ship was a Blue Funnel vessel, but with a magnifying glass on the original card, it spells out Japan Line on her hull; also, the black band on the stack is too narrow for Blue Funnel--now I'm not sure which ship that is. The port is Yokohama.

The year is 1966, which was also the first year for SAGAFJORD to be there. CHITRAL was scrapped in 1970, the ANSON in 1971.

Great Card, thanks for saving me the time to look up all but the 2 I did know

Yokohama has changed beyond recognition, from the current website anyway; I have never been there. Anyone got a 'modern day' postcard?

Hi

This is an interesting picture from Yokohama.

One point that seems to have been missed is that three of the ships are decorated over all, in other words with flags.

P & O's Chitral seems to have made a real effort with Red Ensigns on poles flying from the top of both her masts.

The big question is why ?

Having been there many times, including being on the first visit there by a P&O passenger ship, after the last war, this is not the usual style for P&O ships when in Yokohama.

The ship that made the first visit was the P & O passenger ship ' Chusan' .

I assume they are dressed overall because of it being Canberra's first visit.

Hi Peter

Sagaford was not a P & O ship but she is also decorated which leads me to think it is something else.

Well considering this pic is from 1966 and the Sagafjord entered service in 1965, I imagine that it was her maiden arrival into Yokohama as well, so that might account for her being dressed overall as well.

Wasn't it the custom in those days for ships to be dressed overall if they were on a cruise? At least, that is one way to determine if the old liners sailing from New York were cruising or crossing, depending upon if they were dressed overall or not.

Hi Rich

The P & O ship ' Chitral ' would not have been on a cruise then !

Yokohama was her turn round port for the passenger ship service from UK.

She also carried a fair amount of cargo which meant a two or three day stop in Yokohama for the unloading of the outward cargo and the loading of new cargo and which is why her derricks are in use.

The so-called 5th ship visible is a Japan Line cargo liner originally built for Daido Kaiun and merged into Japan Line on April 1, 1964. The name "Japan Line" can be seen on the side of the hull. Brooklyn Maru, Manhattan Maru or Richmond Maru.

And here's a link to the same scene in about 2006-7.

For the "Dressing Overall" or "Dress Ship" question it might help to know what the date was when this pic was taken. It was not uncommon in years past that ships "dressed" to mark a certain home state occasions. Given that the majority of the ships are british this might be the case with the Norwegian ship respectfully complying or it could just be celebrating a maiden visit of one of the ships.
