Hello everyone. I just booked passage on the Queen Mary 2 New York to Southhampton in August 09, then continuing on up to Glasgow, Scotland by train for a week. Got a outside cabin(window) on deck 4. Just wondered if any of you have sailed on her and have any advice on dining, the ship in general, etc?

Congrats!!

I am also going to be sailing on QM2 this year, except I will be on the OCT 4th and 10th crossings. You can look at THIS THREAD. Its my first time cruising so they were giving a lot of good advice.

Is this your first time on her?

1st thing there is plenty to do for 5-plus days. For meals I have not dined in the Britannia but there are several other dining options in the Kings Court as well as the Todd English Restaurant. I was not a fan of the TE but it is worth a try to mix things up a bit.

I strarted my days w/the gym and then a few circuits around the boat deck. The teak covered boat deck on QM2 is wonderful as it is wide and wraps completed around deck 7. Many passengers are up early doing there morning walks and as the weather warms up (or the sun is out) the deck chairs on the sunny side of the boat deck fill up. The spa is also wonderful-check out the indoor pool and saunas when you board the ship. The staff are more the willing to sell you various treatments during the 'open house' and we took advantage of many.

The library is a great spot to catch up on your morning newspaper reading and the book selection is good. The nearby book shop is also stop to pick up a liner/cruise ship book or two. Then there are the interetsing lectures offered and the planatrium shows in Illuminations that will keep you busy until early afternoon! In the evening there are even more offerings to do to keep you busy. To relax a little take a seat in the Golden Lion or Chart Room and watch the sea go by. In the evening (or day) the Commodore Club is also a wonderful spot and the views are fantastic.

I spent many hours just exploring the ship after reviewing my deckplan. Don't forget the observation deck outside the Atlantic Room on deck 11. It is a great place to be for the ship's departure. There is also a window that looks into the bridge-I think it is on deck 12 (it may be closed at times). On deck 8 aft there are these small wings that extend over the side of the ship. It is fun to stand there as the view of the sea below in wonderful.

You will have a great time on this wonderful ship.

I took her twice and IMO the best ship for a first time cruiser
*Smoothest ride afloat
*Interesting eccentric passengers
*more onboard to do than most towns

Thanks everyone for the advice! Can't wait fo aug 09 to come soon enough!! I've been on the SS. Independence(R.I.P.) in '95, MS Veendam in '01, and MS Norwegian Dawn in '05, but to cross the Atlantic on a Cunarder will simply top them all! Will have to read up all I can in the meantime (not to mention the cruise talk threads and posts). Later!!

Something that does not get mentioned so often are the Cunard history exhibits down on deck 2 forward. If you take it slow, and read all the text and admire the details in the archival photos and graphics, it's possible to spend several hours amid the various displays.

Some of the things are quite humorous!

And don't forget the planetarium! It has, what?, 3 or 4 different shows.
