In 1997. How would they had treated this ship. Would they had retained the ship's original lively or converted it in the same way as the SS Norway. Also, how would Star Cruises had handled the ship if it was transfered to their division? I am quite positive that the ship would have gotten a one way ticket to Mr. Metha's Cruise Lines. Any thoughts?

No doubt she would currently be sailing out of New York doing occasional trans Atlantic crossing via Cherbourg and Soton to Rotterdam, they may have decided to lengthen her to improve profitability. Off season long cruises via the southern route to the Med and back and of course the World Voyage. She would have had a good 10 years more service in her - before retiring as a museum in Manhattan.

Sorry could not resist being perverse.

In honesty it would never have happened. NCL couldn't have afforded her and she simply was not suitable for them anyway.

By 1997 NCL had gotten rid of their original fleet, built in the late '60s and early '70s, and were trying to figure out what to do with the NORWAY, dating from 1962, which they were giving away at $399.00 p.p. just to get people to sail on her. Why on earth would they have kept an even older vessel like ROTTERDAM?

NCL would have done the same as Carnival Corporation; sell her to Premier Cruises or the next highest bidder.

NCL only held onto the SSNorway for so long because some accounting chicanery had her way overvalued at $100m. Her resale value was $25m at the most. NCL could not take that loss w/o a shareholder revolt.

Premier's business model failed. The classic ships that survive from Classic International Voyages and Monarch International are small ships long ago converted to diesel on specialized itineraries and cruise formats. They are not marketed in the United States.

Main stream cruise lines do not want old ships, nor do their clientele.

Major complaint is the cramped cabin with that tiny round window.

Yeah, I have a thought. Why don't you stop posting about saving old ships.

I think we have covered the subject in detail and these posts are now getting to be annoying. Asking the same question over and over will not result in a different answer.

You are formally warned that going forward I will begin deleting your posts unless they include something more than idle speculation or rumours from silly web sites.

You have made 134 posts since joining the forum and 134 of them have essentially been about the same subject. Give it a rest...

Have a nice day.

NCL would have painted her in a medium blue hull (like Norway's) and converted the wasteful enclosed promenades into cabins-possibly verandah cabins!! The original interior woodwork would have been painted over in bright 'tropical' colors and all new 1990s style furniture would have been added. She could have been placed on a 3-day party run out of Miami catering to the spring break crowd. After several year of this she would have been transferred to the Asian casino market where her lounges would be gutted and converted into vast casinos and re-decorated in a 'tasteful' Asian style. After a few years of this service she would have been beached.

World cruises would be difficult as the ships would risk falling of the edges!

And to do a full world cruise (round trip) - would they now not have to be twice as long as well? or at least sail twice as far?

If the world where flat Carnival would be doing cruises there from Miami.

Celebrity would rename all observation lounges the Bar at the Edge of World and Princess would rename all theirs (not that they have many any more) Windows to the World ( a name I liked even if the lounge itself was not up to much as you could not actually see out of most of it) .

Wouldn't a world cruise then be cheaper - no more steaming up hill ?

Sorry could not resist !
