The three liners started for APL in the early 50's were intended to be the PRES. ADAMS, HAYES and JACKSON but before they were delivered, the Navy requisitioned the trio for Korea War service as troopships and they became respectively the USNS GEIGER, UPSHUR and BARRETT. None of them was returned to APL and all ended up as Maritime Academy schoolships. The GEIGER and BARRETT have both now been scrapped but the UPSHUR is today in Mobile, Alabama where she has the ignominious fate of being a platform for firefighting testing for the USCG which involves her being set alight regularly.

As far as I can recall, APL ceased carrying passengers on their cargo liners sometime in the 1980’s when the original ship operating subsidies from MarAd expired. A pity but carrying passengers meant extra crew and that wouldn’t fly in today’s world I am afraid.
