I would guess the old letters spelling out FRANCE were not scrapped when the ship was converted in 1979-80 and may have been sold to collectors.

The letters from FRANCE's name were sitting at the Le Havre Maritime Museum when I was there in 2003, not on public display but in a back storage area, along with a huge builder's model of NORMANDIE. I was trying to photograph them (unsuccessfully) through an iron grate in a back door. Now I understand that the museum has been closed down, and I don't know the whereabouts of any of their magnificent artifacts and models.
Perhaps one of our French members, or anyone else, has some knowledge of this?
