In 1986 the Soviet cruise liner MIKHAIL LERMONTOV struck rocks and sank in Milford Sound, New Zealand. I've found an excellent website devoted to this ship and the disaster, which many people are not familiar with:

A fascinating story about which speculation is still rife.
It was Marlborough Sound, not Milford.

Here is a sonar image of her today
Underwater Times

Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand (Feb 17, 2006 21:56 EST) A scientist from New Zealand's National Instute of Water & Atmospheric Research (NIWA) has used sophisticated sonar technology to reveal a ghost-like image of the Mikhail Lermontov lying in its watery grave in the Marlborough Sounds.

Twenty years after sinking, the hull of the Mikhail Lermontov is largely intact on the sea floor. Divers rarely see more than a very small part of the 155 m wreck because underwater visibility is usually poor at Port Gore in the Marlborough Sounds, where the ship has rested since 16 February 1986.

But didn't she have an ice-strengthened hull? Should that have protected her from so much damage?

Amazing image, quite haunting. The ship is remarkably intact. I had never heard of her before.

I have some friends in Baltimore who did cruise on her during a series of cruises she did from that port. I think it was "bare-bones" and before all the private en suite facilities were added. They were not impressed with food or service as I remember. I seem to remember they mentioned the use of waitresses in the dining room. The is the first I've read of the details of her sinking.

An ice strengthened hull usually refers to an ice belt, which is a section of plating near the waterline that may have supplemental thickness and extra stiffeners. Sometimes the supplemental thickness of plating needs to be only 2-3 mm greater than standard. An ice belt would not have extended to her bottom, and even if it did, it still would not have been enough to prevent damage. The bottom of a ship can not practically be made strong enough to withstand the point loadings associated with striking rocks or a reef.

Indeed a very interesting page, thanks for sharing.
I really loved to see this ship at several occasions in summer at Ajaccio in the late 70s or begining 80s when she still had her black hull. Her sheer was amazing, one of the most pronunced I've ever seen for a large ship. This was quite a sight.

A small error in the site however, 577.8 ft equal 176.1 meters and not 155, as mentioned for her lenght.

Remember this sinking well. The Russians where embarrassed by this sinking. Sad to see such beautiful vessel going down.
Here an interesting link.

Greetings Ben.

Hi All

One of the sister ships to the Mikhail Lermontov which was built for the Baltic Shipping Company of Leningrad in 1964 was the Aleksandr Pushkin.

She was 20, 502 grt when built and carried 750 passengers.

She now sails as the Marco Polo and has just been sold by Orient Lines.

The first ocean going ship that I ever sailed on - a one nighter from Tilbury to Bremerhaven in USSR days.

It wouldn't sell well today!

Thirty five minutes to wolf down dinner or they turned the lights out - and the fried brussels sprouts - euggghhh!

After the third vodka and orange they started omitting the vodka - thought we wouldn't notice - cue international incident - almost.

Entertainment - a table tennis table or films on tractor production.

But look what can and has been done on the Marco - lovely ship!

Here is the new LERMONTOV departing on her first sailing from New York, 12 June 1973. One of the first ship photos I ever took!
