Ebay page here
In particular an external bow view which I cannot recall seeing before is starting to attract bigger than usual bids. But the name has signs of being edited and the hull doesn't seem brand new...

Yes, definitely the OLYMPIC--you can see that A-Deck is not enclosed as it was on TITANIC. And while TITANIC would have been anchored at Queenstown (there are several famous Father Brown photos of her there) this view obviously has had the name on the bow replaced--the lettering isn't even the same.
I see that now the eBay seller has issued a caveat that this may indeed be an image of OLYMPIC.

My mind must have been at the punch bowl; Queenstown could be a possibility (I suppose Cherbourg is as well).
Russ
Please don't shout at me but is it 100% the Olympic ?( I like a good conspiracy story)!

I don't know what damage you are referring to unless it is the missing paint on the bow. Many new ships lost their paint on the bow due the ocaen hitting new paint. Normandie and ssUS were among many that had bare steel showing after their fast first crossings.

Indeed. Here is a photo of OLYMPIC's maiden arrival at New York on 21 June 1911. Note the paint missing from her bow. By the way, that's the outbound LUSITANIA in the background.
Thank you Rich... seems to prove the above eBay photo is Olympic and taken on her Maiden call at New York. How else can the missing paint be identical.

I think it is. I remember seeing a pic of her in the lower bay riding at anchor after her maiden voyage (w/missing paint). I think the photo is in the great 'Majesty at Sea' book on the four-stackers or John Maxtone-Graham's 'The Only way To Cross'.
I thought that the missing paint was infact a scrape mark!

Yup--it's in "Majesty at Sea". Here we see OLYMPIC on the morning of 21 June 1911, riding at anchor at Quarantine upon her first arrival at New York. This is the position she was in when the eBay photo at the top of this thread was taken. Even the canvas wrapping the forepeak railing is in place after the crossing!

Whoever buys the photo would be well advised to have some proper restoration work done and have the letters OLYMP returned to their rightful place. Then maybe the picture would be worth the $300 presently being offered.
Great collective detective work on this board, leading to Linerrich's convincing verdict , OLYMPIC on the morning of 21 June 1911, riding at anchor at Quarantine upon her first arrival at New York!!
BUT
300 dollar it's ridiculous fore a picture obviously altered. I believe that in particular cases the bidding is out of control on e-bay. Specially on this sort of items. At the HAL e-bay pages there is a Italian guy try to sell HAL porcelain tiles fore 14.99 euros. It's mad fore 1 tile.

Nothing much has changed apart from the fact that they would use manaul means to manipulate the photo and not Photoshop!
Pam pointed out to me that every image she had seen of 'Norwegian Gem' from NCL was a photoshoped version of the previous newbuild.

Well, the OLYMPIC was only in service for one week also, and look at her bow in the above photos. It wasn't the time necessary to do the damage, it was just the fact that the ship in the photo was obviously not TITANIC. She would have probably looked the same had she made it to NYC.

Keep in mind that the photo is from the San Francisco Examiner archives. So while the photo is clearly not Titanic it may have some value as an example of how the press operated at the time. Since they did not have a photo of Titanic available, they manipulated one of Olympic and used it to illustrate an article - possibly about the sinking. The name change was most likely made around the time of the sinking and not by the seller, who now admits it is likely Olympic. Still she could change the title of the item on Ebay.
Your'e right, it is a well known fact that with the lack of Titanic photos that the often used to show the Olympic whilst reporting the news etc!
