Going by Aussie pronouncation we have always said it as "Or-KAY-dees".
Another one thats is different is "Canberra" , others say "Can-bear-ra" and we Aussie simply just say "Can-braa".

Thanks Daniel! You're right about CANBERRA; I, like most Americans, always pronounced it "Can-BEAR-a" until I actually sailed her. Then I learned the correct pronunciation (for the capital city as well) is "CAN-burrah."
There never seems to be a correct pronunciation for the names of the old Orient Line ships plus the P & O Canberra.
Another one was the P & O Himalaya which when you have listened to some of the Australian News broadcasters saying the ships names you start to wonder if you are on the right ship.
It is a subject I steer well clear of !

Do you mean CHITRAL?
On the Australian news broadcast Himalaya was given as -
Him-are-lee-ya.
Chitral and Cathay names never seemed to give problems.
