From Metro Source News:

"A Santa Monica-based firm has bid 41-million dollars for the lease on the historic Queen Mary ocean liner and the surrounding property where it's docked in Long Beach, California. Queens Seaport Development, which currently holds the lease to the city-owned tourist attraction, declared bankrupty two years ago and has been searching for a developer to take over the lease since then. O&S Holdings has signed a non-contingency purchase agreement with the bankruptcy trustee for Queens Seaport Development, and that could start a bidding war for the ship and its 40-acres of oceanfront property. The "Press-Telegram" reports that O&S owns 80 properties scross the nation and specializes in retail, restaurant and entertainment centers."

Hi

Lets hope this new company has more luck than those that have tried to run the Queen Mary in the past, since she arrived at Los Angles.

As they are also a development company I trust the City of Los Angles will write something into the leasing agreement that prevents them scrapping the ship and using the land for another development if they get the lease.

I don't think they would want to. It seems to me that the Queen Mary is a huge part of Long Beach's identity. Without the QM Long Beach would just be like all the other citys on Los Angeles' and Orange County's coast line.

Hi Cunard Fan

I have stayed on board RMS Queen Mary in Los Angeles.

I do agree without her there is little else to attract tourists to that area..

Hi

I visited her first in the 1970's but only found time to stay on her about three years ago when visiting relations who live at Manhattan Beach.

I hope things don't change too soon, I'm thinking of booking a room on her for August, any ideas if this is likely to be possible?

I just was on her for 3 days last month and it was wonderful...best advice...bring your camera, batteries and enjoy
I did this today, I took the postcards and the cutaway of the QUEEN MARY, put them in a 24x36 size movie poster frame...it came out pretty good. I used a blue lame fabric for the background.

Thanks for the photo of your collage.

To hang postcards on the wall is a nice idea - mine are stowed away in some boxes.

Thank you Ernest and Cunard Fan....I enjoyed working on the collage today. It's part of the new 'me' so to speak.....part of my new life. I've never been able to put up something this huge as far as cruise ship/ocean liner memorabilia goes. My next one will be of the SS NORWAY. It will go right beside the QUEEN MARY. I hope to stay on board the QM next year...hopefully for a whole week. Those 3 days just are'nt enough.

Well when ever you do it be sure to post a picture of it! I love old (and new) ship post cards.

I don't think that any amount of time is enough on the Queen Mary!

You bet I'll post it Cunard Fan , it will be my pleasure to do that. And I totally agree, there is no such thing as enough time to go all over the QM. I think when I was on her last month, I really barely scratched the surface. But what I did see, I thank PhilInLA who posted here and I know very well, for letting me see somethings I did'nt know about.

The problem is that she is still a fascinating ship for 'ship fans' but she's not a great hotel for those less interested in Ocean Liners.

As often said, she's in the middle of nowhere, as most docks are.

I have strong doubts that the Queen Mary would ever be moved due to the fact that she's been there so long and the surrounding area would need to be extensively dredged which would cost a huge amount of money. I did see a plan where some organization wanted to add some sort of sky tram from downtown Long Beach over to the Queen Mary, to attract & transport more visitors to the ship. It would be kind of neat to be able to get an aerial view of the QM from the tram. Even if there were some sort of monorail system that went back & forth between Long Beach and the QM property area would be nice. Of course a development team could also consider building a land-mass near the bow of the QM and put in a beautiful park with trees and grass so people could have a picnic with a fantastic view of the QM. All of these ideas cost money. It's been a few years since I've explored the QM, but I have never been too fond of the management style of Joseph Prevatil. The QM property area has such great potential if it were managed with better ideas and more skill. I'm also for preserving what there is of the QM. I know there has been great care taken in the past to keep the decking looking good, and there are areas of the ship that are under-utilized which happens to allow more decay. I would like to see a different management company come in a turn the operation around and make it a more profitable venture. The potential is there...they just need better management.
