Good afternoon!

Well it’s been a long day. We got up at 3AM and went into San Francisco to watch the QE2 sail in. WOW!!

What a beautiful liner! We’ve only seen her in pictures. It’s so different seeing her “live”. We went to the end of Pier 39 and got shots of her sailing under the Golden Gate and into the bay. We then made our way to Pier 35. A security guard there told us that we could go in and watch from the viewing lounge. This was pretty cool because the ship had just docked. Well, when we got there, not only could we view from the lounge, they let us go through and outside to the waterfront itself. Nothing between us and QE2 except a hundred feet or so. Bonus!!

Next, we went to Coit Tower and got some shots, then onto the Golden Gate Ferry to Larkspur to get some shots from the bay.

Attached is a link to some of our pics. Hope you like them.

Wow, I have never seen QE2 before, and when I got up close, the striking, long, sharp hull made sure you knew that this was no ordinary cruise ship. I have seen ships 140,000 Grt, but none have left an impression on me like the QE2 did, just once I would love to sail on the legend.

For those in the Bay Area who have never seen the QM2 in person and just got the opportunity to see the QE2, here is a reminder of the size difference...

I hope you get to the QM2 also.

Very interesting pictures.
I like the bridge close up as they seems to indicate a new detail never noticed before...
Right under the bridge, very large windows can be seen, leading to the open (Quarter)deck..
Is this new?
Also, the top suite balconies definitely inspired the recent "Poseidon" movie's model...

We will defiitely be in SF to see QM2 arrive. We sailed QM2 in May 2004 and we're looking forward to seeing her again.

FYI - QM2 will dock at Pier 27.

We're going to go to Aquatic Park to get some pics of her coming in under the Golden Gate. As she will be parading around the bay (or doing something) for several hours prior to docking, we will head down to Pier 39 and get some more shots and then down to Pier 27.

Hornblower is offering a "Welcome QM2" cruise that day too. We bought tickets for Jack's folks so they can get pics from the bay as we're getting them from shore.

She is supposed to sail under the Golden Gate @ 3:30 PM with a flotilla of boats. Not quite sure what she will be doing until 8PM, but we'll be there the whole time.

Someone suggested in another thread taking a picture of her from above on the Golden Gate Bridge. That would be a really cool picture. Also somewhere cool would be anywhere you can the ship with the city in the background.

I will definitely look into the Hornblower cruise. Maybe there is a Cruise Talk reunion in the making?!?!

Coming over the Bay Bridge in the morning it was so exciting to see QE2 docked. Looking down the Embarcadero is was so cool seeing the big funnel straight ahead. I went out of my way to go past the pier but, since she was between piers, it was hard to see much below the promenade.

I never knew the funnel is kind of faceted, and not a smooth curve.

Just as I was about to doze off for the night, that familiar horn went off, one long and several short...and the QE2 was gone. I did not get a chance to see her but it was great to hear her! So happy I got 2 chances to sail on her!

Lovely selection of photos cljw & 6263866, I very much enjoyed going through them all. Wouldn't it have been wonderful if both QE2 & QM2 were in SF together Dream on...

Look forward to seeing loads of QM2 as well when she calls. Hope you manage to get as close as you did to QE2.

Which picture are you referring to? I have (like a number of others here) sailed on her numerous times and don't see anything different - let us know the exact pic you're referring to and we can figure this out
