Many of the regulars here seem adept at finding photos from the past, yet it fails me. I would like to see a photo of China Sea Discovery after she suffered the engine room fire, or on the beach at Alang. I'm curious to see what damage the blaze did. Can any of you find such a photo? A favoured vessel of mine.
Thanks

A good shot, thanks for passing it along. Must have been before the fire swept through her; apparently it was very early in the demolition process. For most, a pic such of this would probably hold no interest.

Hi Pam

A number of the workers at the ship breakers yard died in the fire on her while she was being broken up at Alang.

I think there may be some pictures on the Australian Maritime website.

Here is a report of the fire from Maritime Matters, published last February. After this initial report, it was confirmed that a number of workers were killed, many more injured. Since the ship was more or less gutted by the fire, the scrapping process proceded quickly in making her disappear.

Former Cunarder Fire
February 20: Ahmedabad press reports a serious fire which broke out on on February 17 in the engine room of 1956-built SEA DISCOVERY (ex CARINTHIA, FAIRLAND, FAIRSEA, FAIR PRINCESS, CHINA SEA DISCOVERY), now partially scrapped at Alang, India. It appears that the fire trapped a number of workers inside the vessel and nine labourers, some with serious burns, have been hospitalised. The beached ship was at the time 300 feet from the shore.

She and her sister, Fairwind, were two of the very handsomest rebuilds of all time....IMHO.

As Fair Princess she was the first ship I cruised on, back in March 1997. I'm just reading about her in the book The Sitmar Liners. She was a very nice ship, nice open decks and a very nice profile.

I was also on board in 1997 and did the 2 weeks around New Zealand and back. She was a great ship and even though she was fully booked it never felt crowed. The book "The sitmar liners" is a great read and i recommend it to anyone interested in the history of these liners.

Regards Linerdan.

It was a real shame to lose these sisters. Of the 4 Saxonia sisters, these lead the most glamourous lives and to my eye, after their refit as Fairsea & Fairwind, were amongst the most well proportioned passenger ships of all time.

Having travelled on them as a youth, I still miss them terribly. I'd really hoped to have sailed on one of them again, but missed the chance.

The five tiered stern decks have not seen an equal since, in my opinio. 3 great pools on them as well. The memories of floating in the pool and watching the wake disappear over the horizon will always be remembered. Steam power, and as a result, absolutely no noise anywhere on deck. Wonderful sea boats as well. Just wish I could see a picture from the beach that shows how she burnt out

Below is a very sad photo of China Sea Discovery ablaze on the beach at Alang.
I have heard that the ship was almost completely gutted by the fire.

Unfortunately I cannot give credit to the author of this photo, as it was sent to me long ago with no information given.

Thanks for the pictures. That is what I wanted to see. Very sad for those of us that loved the ship.
