The shipowner has announced that next Thursday (24 August), the s.s. Rotterdam will leave Gdansk and will be towed to Wilhelmshafen in Germany and not to Kaliningrad in Russia as declared earlier. The 'Celica', the cargoship on which the toxic waste will be transferred, is still on the roads of Gdansk.

Today they posted following statement on their website:
Choosing an alternative harbour23.08.2006 - Dissension between two parties in Kaliningrad harbour in Russia has resulted in the Shipping Company opting for an alternative harbour. It was intended for the bags of asbestos waste to be transported from Kaliningrad. At the same time the new mooring place at the Gdansk dockyard would also be prepared for the arrival of the ss Rotterdam. Several dockyards in Europe have now offered their services, resulting in the departure from Poland not having to suffer any further delays. We will decide on a dockyard as soon as possible in order for the steamship to be able to unload the bags and for renovation activities to be continued.

I totally agree Patsy! I wonder how these shipyards stay in business. It seems that they don't even want the business.
Will it ever happen?
My contact in Gdansk is trying to find which tug, what time of departure and destination.I hope to hear from him very soon.

This one is a goer.
It was just unfortunate that someone forgot to disclose the bags of asbestos on board when she arrived in Gdansk
It no doubt would have been better if the bags had been removed before her arrival there then work may have been able to progress.
There does however seem to be a problem with the depth of water in the harbour which does not seem to have been fully explained.
It could just be too shallow in the area where they wish to put her to carry out the rest of the work.
Regards,
Neil ( Bob )
There are of course risks involved (towing her etc.) - and old ships are always good for surprises but other than in the case of the Norway it was not an accident which ended her carrer - and it is also an advantage that she is much smaller - which makes it easier to accomodate her should this project - for whatever reason - fail. (which would be the worst case scenario)
So let's hope that there are no more surprises - and that everything goes well - and please keep us updated. (whoever has access to reliable information)
Yes. I know I'm worrying unnecessarily. I can't help it. I'm surprised I haven't got loads of wrinkles the amount I worry. LOL! I'm really surprised they didn't declare the asbestos bags. It was a bit sloppy of them. Perhaps it just didn't occur to them there would be a problem. But things are progressing nicely, albeit at a very slow pace. I bet the owners will be relieved when everything returns to normal and the restoration can be completed after all the time, effort and money they've put in so far. They'd probably hate it more than we do if it all collapsed after reaching this stage.
Look forward to the latest installment, Willem!
