This is where it all began for me...these photos are from the very moment in time that triggered a passion for liners, particularly the Queen Mary. My father took these photos of our visit to the Queen Mary in 1977, and I have never seen these photos until recently, when my Dad was going through his thousands of slides and scanning them to put on disks. These photos are truly nostalgic for me and quite a treasure.

A young Barryboat wandering the Queen Mary
The very beginning of a lifelong passion for liners
Second visit to Queen Mary in 1980

Anyone else recall a pivital moment in time that changed the course of your life? (regarding ships) Better yet, do you have photos of that moment? (ship related)

My dad took my brother and me to see the Queen arrive off Long Beach in 1967. I do not remember it but I do remember seeing her in the naval shipyard two years later w/her stacks off and the hull and superstructure sandblasted and primed in grey. We also visited her again in 1971 or '72 when they were filming outdoor scenes of The Poseidon Adventure. I seduced by passengers ships from the time I was six years old seeing my grandparents and their friends off on their yearly trip to Hawaii in 1969 on the ss Lurline. It was so exciting being onboard a real twin-funneled ocean liner and feeling the excitement of sailing day. I was hooked.

It's amazing how events that happen in our youth can have such a powerful impact on our adult life.

lasuvidaboy, Do you know Charles Sachs? He lived in the Hollywood Hills area for many years. He has an organization called ONRS. He collects liner post cards and other collectibles.

Those are marvellous, Barryboat.

No pics I'm afraid. My dad was stupid and never took any when he was here during the 60s when he was in the army or later when we moved here in 1972 (except Northern Star's depature on cine film as well as Pendennis Castle when we were in Durban). But I first became aware of ships when he dragged me and my mum down to Shore Road to watch the France leave for the final time in 1974. From then on, because they used to arrive and leave at completely different times to now, I used to watch out of my bedroom window to catch them sailng past. I even used to stop at junior school if I saw something because we could see them from the playground.

I met him once many years ago (in the 1980s) but have no idea where he is today.

I think he lives in Palm Springs now...I still get emails from him once in a while. He produced an event aboard the Queen Mary called TITANIC Tonight, where he even had one of the survivors as a guest of honor. I met her and got her autograph. I think he once showed me an actual tea plate from the Titanic that was smuggled off before her maiden voyage. He had a ton of ship memorbilia.

I went to one of those events on QM approx. 1986 or '87. It may have been the same event that you attended. The survivor was an elderly lady who told the crowd about the ship and going down the side in a lifeboat. I don't know how much she actually remembered or just re-told the same story over the years. She was very very old at that time an appeared a little confused but it was still fantastic to be in the former 1st Class lounge w/a Titanic survivor.

Edwina Trout-Mackenzie. Don't ask me how the hell I remembered a person's name from an event over 20 years ago. I just remembered her odd maiden name. I could have sworn it was in the late 80s but now I remember I was still at UCLA. Great memory Le Barryboat! I remember looking up at the ceiling panels above our table. We were seated on the port side of the lounge (not under the main dome) and I commented about them to a friend. They were/are modern simulated wood panels that for some reason replaced the original simple painted ceiling panels.

1) Fly to Los Angeles. Sometimes there are some good off-season flight deals at certain times of the year www.expedia.co.uk.

2) Hire a car or book a shuttle bus www.supershuttle.com to take you to the the QM, It's a fair distance from the Airport. (A car is very useful in LA).

It is well worth staying onboard the QM for a couple of nights in one of the original cabins (do specify this). She's not that expensive really, see: www.queenmary.com

Disney and Universal Studio's are of course in the LA area. They are worth a day each. Of course there is Hollywood too and the homes of the stars. Everything can be booked on-line in advance, these days!

The QM is still breathtaking. If you really want to do something special make sure that you are onboard the QM for the New Years Eve party - it is the best!

As Malcolm posted, you really need a car when visiting Southern California. Queen Mary is approx. a 30 minute freeway drive from LAX. The Long Beach Freeway ends in downtown Long Beach w/a bridge connecting over to QM.
