fantastic pictures Pam. I would guess the black smoke is from the diesel powered bow thrusters exhaust.

Wind? Cracking pics, Pam. Is that a building behind in the first one or another ship? It's hard to tell these days.

She's the last of her sisters......and I think she's the oldest. The others, I think, have all gone to the breakers and one sunk. She looks great in the photos. Thanks Pam.

First absolutely fantastic pictures.

Second - where is this bridge wing coming from?!?!?!?!?!?!

You can actually see it in the post refit picture in this thread too!!!!!!

other thread

So is this a renaissance of open bridge wings? (personally I would prefere the option to have an open wing) Or has it only been added because of the balconies?

I would say this is a SMALL SENSATION.

2nd oldest. Ivan Franko was the first.

Yes, excellent images.

I toured her last year. I really wanted to love her. However I was a little disappointed. Although she is intimate and has a lot of charm, her interiors are not as attractive as her exterior. Many of her public rooms were rather 'bland'. I just expected something 'special' on the inside, too.

Like the Saga and Olsen ships, her clientele tends to be very mature. That's not to say that she would not provide a great cruise experience.

This is just an extra tagged on so the bridge officers can see past the balconies. It's cheaper to have an open wing I assume. I have many pics from above and below.. but you'll have to wait until this evening

Would like to sail here.

Greetings Ben.

Actually, there were five ships built of this class. Mikhail Lermontov was the fifth and mostly forgotten one, she sank in 1986. Ivan Franco, Shota Rustaveli and Taras Chevchenko are scrapped.

Thanks, Brian. I wasn't sure she was the first. I had forgotten about Ivan Franko. I remember seeing a photo on "Maritime Matters" a while back of the Taras on the way to the breakers. She was sailing on her[his] own with the sun shining brightly on her and she looked terrific....she looked almost new in condition. What a pity! Quel dommage!

Great pictures Pam (as always) about the her bow smoke, you should have seen her late sister ship the Assedo, she did not only steam from the bow but also from the stern while pulling away from the dock side (her crew were too stubborn to get tug assistance, so she showed a lot of power display while turning)

She looks great. I sailed on her 3rd trip in 1966 from Montreal to Tilbury. 99% of the passengers on that trip were from strike bound British Liners ( the great British seaman's strike of 1966) We were supposed to have been on the Empress of Canada. Service crew ,mainly students, were fantastic, a great time was had by all on this Soviet ship in 1966.

I wonder if NCL has a bright future for Orient Lines and the Marco Polo, the ship itself I think will sail far into the new millenium...but who knows about Orient Lines. I dont think she would fit in with either Star or NCL's fleets! But maybe they could add some more classics rebuilt like her and sail them on worldwide Itineraries.!

I had always thought NCL should have transferred Norway to Orient Lines to sail along the Marco Polo.

It's hard to see how 'Orient lines' fits in with the NCL product. It's such a small niche for them to bother about – one small ship.

The Marco Polo would fit in better with the Saga or Olsen operation. She's got a similar feel and clientele to their fleets.

If NCL cared about Orient Lines, they wouldnt have taken the Crown Odyssey away.

And what id the real reason NCL took the Crown Odyssey back from Orient Line? Were they having problems filling two ships?

Yes, I assume that they moved the ship to where the passengers were. NCL is a much stronger mass-market brand than the 'Orient Line' niche. It's not a matter of 'caring' it a matter of good 'business'.

If people were fihjting to book 'Orient Lines' NCL will give the line 2, 3 or 4 ships - whatever could be filled!

I have loaded some views of Century from the tenders, Part I and Part II. In the first batch are some of the duck tail and in the 2nd batch there are a number of pics of the bridge extension from below. Here's one from above:-

Thanks for posting the nice pictures.

Only now I realized that they got rid of the forward facing open deck above the bridge - do you have a picture of her showing her front? I start wondering why people travel by ship.....

Just one or two see here. No open deck fwd, which is one of the points Clive brought up in the other thread, coupled with the filthy Hemisphere windows.

Other than the Festivale (ex SA Vaal) in the late 1970s, has there ever been an attractive rebuild in recent times??

If you go back that far (late 70ies) one could discuss the stretching of the Royal Viking trio. (some liked that - some not)

Costa Marina and Costa Allegra also come to my mind - if you count that. (I am one of the few who find them interesting - a much better design than most ships built since then)
