It has been posted on Maritime Matters of a name change for the Indy.Lets see what happens now.

INDEPENDENCE Renamed

May 23: SS INDEPENDENCE has been laid up at pier 70 in San Francisco since July 26, 2004. Recent eye witness reports say the name was painted out over the last two days and replaced with OCEANIC. The former American Export Liner was renamed OCEANIC INDPENDENCE after C.Y. Tung bought the ship in 1974, the prefix was dropped in 1982.

Sounds scary. Ship owners often change the names of their ships before sending them to the breakers?

Equasis advises she was renamed Oceanic back in Oct last year, along with the tfr of ownership to California Manufacturing [an NCL subsidiary set up for her initial purchase & nothing to do with the company which appears on the net making pickles etc]. This is presumably just 'paperwork'. cljw's photos taken on 15 May show the name 'Independence', so it seems they have just got around to adding the new name now. I don't think there is anything onerous behind it?

Well perhaps they were just waiting for good weather to tow her away. A name change like that cant be good is what I would tend to think.

Name changes comes with the legal jumble big corporations are associated with.
Who knows what lies beneath this name change, a way to cut back on taxes? Perhaps for assurance ? Or the ship has been sold for some reason?

Onno

Still I have the feeling Indy will never be seen again as a sailing ship, just an object NCL bought so that it won’t fall in the hands of the competition.

It would be interesting to know the reason for the name change (curiouse as I am) - but I would not overrate it.

More interesting than these legal/formal issues is of course why NCL is still keeping these vessels - if keeping them away from competitors is the only reason they could have scrapped them - on the other hand Norway and Clemenceau teach us that it can be difficult to scrap such a vessel.

I can see the Indie from my kitchen, I will have to look to see what her bow says as far as her name. It would be so sad to see her go, i've grown so used to seeing her each morning.

Watching my cat chase birds & squirrels [up the trees] and hedgehogs through the grass, is decidedly boring compared to some peoples' views from home... Grrr

Oh boy. This is bad. I can't help but agree with everyone else that thinks so. It is, after all, common practice.

I hope anyone that has anything to do with the Big U outside of NCL are keeping a close eye on this. Scrapping the Indy would be sad, but scrapping the U would be criminal, notwithstanding some public opinion on the matter suggesting that maybe it is her best fate. I'd rather see her sunk than scrapped. Such is a more fitting demise for a ship of her status.

Scrapping the Indy would be sad, but she has had a very long life, two great careers, and it could be time for her to go. I think she might make a nice hotel, as her cabins are pretty large, and her profile is quite classic. I could see her in NYC or maybe SF, tied up at the waterfront as a hotel with bars and resturaunts. I think it could work for her.

Changing her name (unless it id for her delivery voyage to the scrappers) seems pointless. The steel letters spelling out INDEPENDENCE would clearly be seen on her bow and stern.

Its true! I passed by her today and her bow reads "OCEANIC". Surpisingly the font and lettering is very nice, deco almost and fitting for the old gal. I hope she is not going anywhere, and if she is she sinks like her sister, a more fitting end. Last night I watched an old "I LOVE LUCY" where she misses the ship (Constitution) and just above my TV I could see those famous stacks of her sister...

Now its a little odd for anyone to make lettering nice if only temporary..for a delivery voyage! How many scrap yards make their lettering nice never mind readable! So this must mean that she was renamed for some other Reasons!!

I mentioned the renaming to my dad last night and his immediate response was, "She's being scrapped then."

Sadly enough I have to agree that that will be her fate. The Independence is far too unknown and "unimportant" to be returned to service. The somewhat famous SSUS has a chance but as you know I think that that is an extrordinarily slim one.

It is easy to upload pictures to the photo gallery. Actually, we all would be happy if it would be a bit easier - but you will be fine for one or two pictures. If you have problems send me a private message - I can do this for you if you want - we need to see this.
