Maritime Matters reported yesterday that the ss Norway has once again been sold, however the buyer remains unknown.

This isn't good. She's being sold back and forth so much that there's going to be alot of pillaging along the way. She still has alot of good years left, although the cruise companies don't realize this.

As much as I would love for both the NORWAY and The Big U to be saved, restored and put back in service, we have to realise that their time has passed. There just isn't room for their beauty in today's world of cost-effectiveness...

Thankfully we still have QE2 and, after she's gone, QM2!

I don't see the reason of that....there is room for that kind of beauty. There is plenty of room for the SS NORWAY and the BIG U still. I don't see why not...

Becuase the people that cruise now only want the new modern and "fun" cruise. The only people that would appreciate and cruise the older ships are the people who love liners. Which now again isnt too many people. Thats why the cruise line's want new modern and more passenger occupency ships so they can make money.

In that things haven't chansed over the last 150 years.
I do believe that Norway and other oldies in the NCL fleet (US and Indy) are on there final legs now Norway is sold of and is becomme a sort of pingpong ball its a matter of time before we see the sale of the US and Indy.

I agree, Ben. I wouldn't be surprised if, judging by the way they behaved over Norway, they sneak them out on the pretext of refitting only to then sell them for scrap. Or will use the new SOLAS regulations in a year or two to say they're both beyond economical repair.

the main reason ss norway is
not in service is that she uses steam turbines which is
exspensive to operate.
seeing the price of oil at $70+ a barrel would make norway cost prohibited.
i remember the chief engineer
stating that the ss norway
burns 1 gallon of oil per
33 feet. fuel consumption:400,000 gal. a week.

Well, beside the problems with the steam plants (fuel consumption, risk) there are for sure some relevant issues concerning upcoming SOLAS regulations.

I think the main reason she is not in use is because she has had a catastrophic boiler room explosion and the repairs are too prohibitive to make further service a viable option. True, with the recent increases in oil prices and the up coming SOLAS requirements her future was probably bleak.
