QM2 to rendezvous with namesake liner
January 11, 2006

Since Queen Mary 2's 2004 debut, Cunard enthusiasts have wondered if the liner would ever meet her legendary predecessor, the Queen Mary. On Feb. 22, that question will be answered when QM2’s maiden call to Los Angeles includes two sail-bys of the Queen Mary in nearby Long Beach.

Retired from maritime service for nearly 40 years, the Queen Mary -- which sailed from 1936 through 1967 -- is now permanently berthed in Long Beach and is one of the city's best known attractions.

The two Queen Marys will meet twice on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 7 a.m. and again at 5 p.m., as QM2 sails through outer Long Beach harbor, sounding a greeting to the Queen Mary. Cunard said the first-time salutation will take on even more meaning as QM2 carries one of her namesake's original whistles, with a deep bass A note that can be heard up to 10 miles away.

QM2 is longer, taller and nearly twice as large as the Queen Mary but enjoys similar worldwide fame, royal launching ceremonies and celebrity passengers.

The Queen Mary charted her one and only journey to South America on her ‘Last Great Cruise’ in October 1967 and, on the Feb. 22 arrival in Los Angeles, QM2 will have just returned from her maiden foray into the region, becoming the largest passenger vessel ever to round Cape Horn.

That is interesting news, I already wondered why Cunard did not take this PR opportunity before. It will probably not happen but wouldn’t it be great if QM2 could lay along side Queen Mary for a photo moment.

I don't think the depth of the water will allow it?

I don't know just how close the QM2 can come in to where QUEEN MARY is--I know she's too big to use the Carnival berth there. She will sail in the outer harbor, within sight, but I don't know if they'll even be able to get both ships into one photograph.

At least the historical significance is recognized here, and they're making a grand gesture, even if the QM2 has to berth in nearby San Pedro.

QM2 cannot approach the Carnival pier next to QM1 because of her draft. She may turn South after exiting the San Pedro channel and cruise into the basin near the old Long Beach Naval Station (where QM1 was drydocked in the late 1960s) inside the breakwater in order to get as close as possible. Another possibility is that QM2 will slowly cruise off the breakwater for a photo op.

After Dry docked at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard in 1968. Queen Mary sailed or towed to present location. Queen Mary's draft is 39 ft. 4-9/16 in. (12.00 m.) but QM2's draft is 32 feet 10 inches.

As far as I knew, Carnival pier cannot accomodate QM2 though I believe the channel is deeper than the pier side. If the channel between breakwater and Pier H is still deep, It's possible to approach the Queen Mary near Pier H or Pier J*!?

Pier J

1971
The port completes a $7.6 million expansion on Pier J and develops a 55-acre combination container and automobile terminal. The facility processes Toyota's distribution throughout Southern California and the Western U.S.

1993
Maersk Line opens a 107-acre container terminal on the 147-acre Pier J expansion. The new terminal features a wharf with a flexible, multiple-direction piling concept that disperses stress and reduces damage in the event of an earthquake.

The remaining 40 acres of the 147-acre Pier J expansion are incorporated into Pacific Container Terminal.

Pacific Container Terminal (PCT), Long Beach

Water Depth: 45-48 feet, 50 feet in 2004

However Seatrade Insider reported that The two Queen Marys will meet twice on Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 7 a.m. and again at 5 p.m., as QM2 sails through outer Long Beach harbor, sounding a greeting to the Queen Mary.

New date for rendezvous of the Queens
February 6, 2006

The ‘royal rendezvous’ between Queen Mary 2 and her namesake will now take place on Feb. 23 in Long Beach, Calif., a day later than originally announced.

After passing through ‘Queen's Gate,’ the same breakwater gate the Queen Mary used on her arrival to Long Beach in 1967, the Queen Mary 2 will maneuver as close as possible in the harbor to the Queen Mary for a photo opportunity. Then the two ships will sound a whistle salute and the Queen Mary 2 will proceed on her itinerary to Ensenada.

Cunard Line, the R.M.S. Queen Mary and the Long Beach Area Convention & Visitors Bureau launched a website (www.thequeenmarysmeet.com) to promote the occasion, with details on best viewing points, driving directions, ship histories, fun facts and comparisons of the two ocean liners.

Thousands of spectators and numerous ships and boats are expected to sail out to greet QM2 as she approaches the Long Beach coastline at approximately noon. The liner will be on a three-day inaugural sailing from Los Angeles after completing a 38-day voyage around South America.
